Diana: Probablemente conozcas a las emblemáticas hermanas tenistas, Venus y Serena Williams, pero ¿sabías que el básquetbol femenino, tiene su propio dúo de hermanas? Se trata de Erica McCall y su media hermana DeWanna Bonner, y ambas juegan al basket en una liga de élite de los Estados Unidos. Desde que era chica, Erica siempre vio a su hermana mayor como un modelo a seguir.

Erica: Our dad was a coach for a college basketball team, so DeWanna and I always loved the sport. When I was a kid, DeWanna usually spent a few weeks at our dad’s house during the summer, and I loved watching her play basketball. So when she became a professional basketball player, I wanted to do the same thing. She was always my inspiration, and it was my goal to be an amazing player, just like my sister.

Diana: Erica entrenó muy duro y en 2017 alcanzó su objetivo. Ocho años después que su hermana mayor DeWanna, fue seleccionada para la WNBA. Sin embargo, ambas fueron reclutadas por equipos rivales. Erica nunca pensó que tendría que competir contra su propia hermana.

Erica: After I started playing on a professional basketball team, I realized that I was going to have to play against my sister. I was nervous but also really excited. I always thought DeWanna was incredible, and I was ready to show her that I was a great player too.

Hoy, dos historias sobre básquetbol, uno de los deportes más populares de los Estados Unidos.

Diana: Erica McCall pasó mucho tiempo en las canchas de básquetbol durante su infancia en California en los años 2000. Erica solía ir con su padre a los entrenamientos y a los partidos. Pero aunque venía de una familia de jugadores de básquet, el deporte no siempre le resultó fácil.

Erica: When I was eight years old, I joined my first basketball team, and I wasn’t very good, but I really loved the sport. It moved very fast and it gave me lots of energy. I remember my dad always told me, “Just work hard and run, and I’ll teach you everything else.” And that’s what happened.

Diana: DeWanna, la media hermana de Erica, creció en otro estado, así que independientemente de las pocas semanas que pasaban juntas en verano, las dos hermanas no crecieron muy unidas.

Erica: DeWanna is eight years older than I am, and when we were kids, that was a big difference in age. She lived in the state of Alabama with her mom, and I lived in the state of California with our dad, so we didn’t spend a lot of time together. But I always paid attention to DeWanna’s basketball career.

Diana: Cuando creció, Erica se dedicó de lleno al básquetbol, entrenando duro para seguir los pasos de DeWanna. Primero jugó en equipos recreativos por diversión y luego pasó a formar parte de equipos más competitivos. Mientras tanto, a miles de kilómetros, en Alabama, su hermana DeWanna llegaba a lo más alto del mundo del básquet, y ganando varios premios, o awards. Eso motivó a Erica a esforzarse aún más.

Erica: In high school, I started to receive the same awards that my sister received. I was invited to play for USA Basketball, which is the national team of the United States. They play in international tournaments. And then I won an important award for talented high school players. I was very proud! That’s when I realized that I was becoming as successful as DeWanna. I thought, “Yeah, maybe I can do this basketball thing too.”

Diana: Erica ingresó a la Universidad de Stanford y jugó con el equipo universitario, un paso importante en la carrera de muchas jugadoras de nivel. Durante su último año, recibió la noticia por la que tanto había luchado: era una de las 36 jugadoras de Estados Unidos que habían sido reclutadas, o drafted, para la WNBA. Iba a jugar en la élite del país, como su hermana mayor DeWanna.

Erica: When I was drafted into the WNBA, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. My parents and grandparents were with me at the event, and my dad was so happy. Now he had two daughters playing at the professional level! But after I got drafted, I couldn’t believe it. I was going to play against my sister — for the first time in my life!

Diana: Erica estaba nerviosa por jugar contra su hermana mayor, a la que había admirado siempre, sobre todo porque tanto ella como su equipo eran muy buenos. Pero también estaba emocionada, porque por fin había alcanzado el nivel de DeWanna.

Erica: My team, the Indiana Fever, was going to play against my sister’s team, the Phoenix Mercury. My dad came to watch us play against each other for the first time. He was so excited. I was looking forward to the game. And I really wanted to play well.

Diana: Erica dio lo mejor de sí en la cancha, pero su equipo terminó perdiendo el partido 77 a 95.

Erica: The game against my sister’s team was important to me, but I was upset because I didn’t think I played well. I was so disappointed that I cried after the game. My dad and my sister were there to support me. It was embarrassing, but I was happy that my sister was there with me, even though we played on different teams. After we competed against each other, she helped me remember that I was still doing really well in my basketball career.

Diana: En los siguientes tres años, Erica y DeWanna jugaron en contra varias veces más en la WNBA, pero eso no significó que pasaran mucho tiempo juntas; viajaban mucho. La temporada de la WNBA va de mayo a septiembre, por lo que en la temporada baja, como muchas jugadoras estadounidenses, Erica y DeWanna también jugaban en Europa. En 2021, mientras Erica jugaba en Hungría, recibió una noticia inesperada.

Erica: My coach asked me if they could invite DeWanna to join our team for a season. They wanted a very experienced player to help us win the Euro Cup championship. I said, “Yes, absolutely!” I wasn’t sure if DeWanna wanted to join our team because we didn’t have a lot of experience and we played in a small country. But she agreed!

Diana: Aunque ambas jugaban al básquetbol y compartían muchos intereses, Erica y DeWanna no habían pasado mucho tiempo juntas durante su infancia. Erica se dio cuenta de que no conocía muy bien a su hermana mayor.

Erica: When DeWanna arrived in Hungary, it was a little strange to spend time with her because we didn’t have a close relationship then. I was really excited to introduce her to my teammates, but I was also nervous because not many people knew that we weren’t close. They asked me questions about her, but I didn’t know the answers. That was hard for me because I felt like I should know more about her.

Diana: Pero, poco a poco, algo entre las hermanas cambió.

Erica: Because I played in Hungary for four years, I knew a lot about the country and the team. So, I started to act like I was DeWanna’s older sister. I took her to the grocery store and showed her my favorite things to buy. I made sure she had everything she needed. She didn’t have a car, so I drove her to practice every day. I also introduced her to my friends, including an older Hungarian couple who were like my family.

Diana: Durante los trayectos en auto de ida y vuelta a los entrenamientos, empezaron a conocerse no solo como jugadoras sino también como hermanas.

Erica: At first, we mainly talked about our dad, which was the biggest thing we had in common. But then, one day, I asked her for advice about problems in my relationship. And that’s when we really started to become closer to each other. We talked about life, love, family and, of course, basketball. The ride to practice was only about ten minutes, but those small conversations helped us feel more comfortable. I loved those car trips because it was our time to talk and finally learn more about each other.

Diana: Erica estaba acostumbrada a admirar desde lejos a su hermana mayor, y verla como una competidora. Pero ahora se daba cuenta de que también podían ser amigas. A medida que pasaban más tiempo juntas, mejoraba su química en la cancha.

Erica: Playing together as teammates was great. DeWanna gave me advice while playing, and I absolutely loved that. One time, when I was not playing well during a game, DeWanna said, “C’mon Erica, you can do this!” And there was a moment during another game when I had to support her. I really loved helping her, too.

Diana: Juntas se volvieron imparables. Con la ayuda de DeWanna, su equipo húngaro llegó hasta las semifinales de la Eurocopa. Ganaron los dos primeros partidos de manera decisiva, pero el tercero fue una dura batalla.

Erica: We lost that game. DeWanna was so disappointed because she really wanted to help our team win. She cried after that game, and it was the first time I saw her cry because of basketball. When I was trying to help my big sister feel better, I remembered that first game when we played against each other. She supported me after my team lost that game, so it felt good to do the same for her.

Diana: El equipo de Erica y DeWanna ganó el siguiente partido y quedó tercero en el torneo, un gran logro. Pero Erica sintió que había ganado aún algo más especial.

Erica: After that game, we all went back to the hotel and had a big celebration. My dad was there, too. It was really special that he was able to share that moment with us. And after DeWanna and I played together on the same team, I felt like we finally had the relationship that I always wanted. Now, we are closer than ever.

Diana: Al igual que Erica, a nuestra siguiente protagonista también le encanta el básquetbol desde muy pequeña. Su nombre es Fannie Franklin-Ko y aprendió a jugar básquetbol en su escuela, en San José, California. Cuando era niña, todos querían tenerla en su equipo y eso le encantaba.

Fannie: As kids, everyone was the same size, and we all had the same skill level. It was so much fun. I was fast and I didn’t have any fear. And boys and girls all played together.

Diana: En el básquetbol, los jugadores suelen ser altos, lo que lleva a mucha gente a creer que ser más alto se traduce en ser un mejor jugador. Y cuando Fannie se unió al equipo de básquet en la secundaria, comenzó a ver aún más diferencias físicas entre hombres y mujeres.

Fannie: As I got older, I tried to play basketball after high school but there were always a lot of men, and they were very aggressive when they played. It didn’t make me feel safe. And when everyone chose players for their teams, I was always the last person they chose because I’m a girl and I’m short. But if I played with them and I made a shot, they became embarrassed. It was annoying because I loved basketball, but I felt like I couldn’t enjoy it like I did when I was a kid. I slowly stopped playing. It just wasn’t fun anymore.

Diana: Lentamente, el rechazo hizo que Fannie dejara de jugar y se concentrara en sus estudios de diseño gráfico. Después de graduarse de la universidad en 2015, Fannie comenzó su vida adulta y se anotó en una maestría en diseño.

Fannie: In 2016, I moved to do a master’s program in San Francisco, and I wanted to start a new life. But I didn’t know anybody there. The only thing I was doing was going to school for design, so I realized that I needed some hobbies. At that time, it had been many years since I played basketball. But I thought it could be a great way to have fun again and meet new people.

Diana: Fannie decidió asistir a un gimnasio abierto, u open gym, para mujeres y personas LGBTQ porque ella se identifica como queer. En el básquetbol, suelen llamarle gimnasio a los espacios que comprenden una cancha, gradas y vestidores. Fannie escuchó los sonidos del básquet de nuevo y su corazón empezó a latir cada vez más fuerte.

Fannie: I had not been to an open gym in years, and it was really beautiful to see people playing basketball again. And there were women of all different sizes there. I remember sitting down, putting on my shoes, and looking around. I didn’t know anything about the players, and I wondered if they were all going to be really good.

Diana: En Estados Unidos, además del básquet profesional, también se juega otro estilo de básquetbol más casual: El pick up basketball. Allí juegan desde semiprofesionales hasta amateurs como Fannie. Mientras que en el básquet profesional hay árbitros, o referees, en el casual no hay.

Fannie: So, in a traditional basketball game, there are referees. The teams have a coach, and they practice together before they play games. But pick up basketball is different. You’re just playing with strangers, and everyone has a different skill level. For pick up games, you usually just meet in a gym and then create teams. There’s no referee, so we all have to make sure we follow the same rules. But we usually just play for fun!

Diana: Fannie entró a la cancha y comenzó a recordar cómo lanzar y cómo moverse. A su alrededor, otras mujeres hacían lo mismo y Fannie se dió cuenta que eran principiantes como ella y que estaban allí para divertirse. Repartieron equipos y pronto Fannie se sorprendió con una jugadora en especial.

Fannie: She was a very talented player, and she made playing basketball look easy! I was excited because I realized I could learn a lot from her. At the end of the practice, everybody was getting ready to go, and this player stood up and introduced herself. She said her name was Emma, and she wanted to tell us something.

Diana: Emma dijo que quería armar una liga femenina de pick up basketball. Fannie se emocionó mucho. Emma quería hacer entrenamientos en Oakland, que es la ciudad que limita con San Francisco y es donde justamente vivía Fannie.

Fannie: I thought, “Wow, this is an incredible opportunity to play again!” I wanted to play with players who were good, but I also wanted to feel safe. And that was the space that Emma created. I went to the first open gym and 15 people came. That’s when I knew that this group was going to be amazing.

Diana: Fannie asistió a todos los entrenamientos sin falta, así que pronto se volvió amiga de Emma. Un día en la casa de Emma, ella le puso un nombre al grupo: Pick Her Up o “Ayúdala a levantarse”.

Fannie: The name means “pick up basketball,” but it also means helping and supporting other women. I thought this was a perfect name for an organization. I really loved the community because it was the first space where I felt safe as a queer and Asian woman. We were all there to celebrate basketball. And this was something that I really enjoyed.

Diana: En el verano de 2016, Emma y Fannie continuaron desarrollando Pick Her Up. Y también jugaron con otras comunidades LGBTQ. Uno de esos partidos fue en el colorido distrito de Castro, en San Francisco.

Fannie: We were playing a game on a Tuesday in a gym in the Castro District which was a very queer neighborhood. It was a small gym that was covered in dust, and there was a box where people put basketballs. A crowd of people sat down on that box as we began to play. I was playing a great game, and I was making every shot! I started hearing people in the crowd cheering for me.

Diana: Sentada encima de la caja, sin conocerla, una jugadora comenzó a apoyar a Fannie. Su nombre era Nikki y a Fannie le gustó. Pero al ser tímida, se fue de la práctica sin hablarle.

Fannie: Nikki started to come to practice at Pick Her Up. She was a great player. One night, our group went to karaoke, and we started talking. And then, one day, I told Emma, “Hey, I have something to tell you: I’m dating Nikki.” And Emma said that she already knew! That was because I talked about Nikki all the time, so it was pretty obvious.

Diana: Las dos se complementaron pese a sus diferencias: Fannie era introvertida y a Nikki le gustaba ser el centro de atención. Nikki y Fannie se volvieron muy buenas jugando juntas y pronto se enamoraron.

Fannie: In 2018, about two years after we met, Nikki and I went on a hike — and she asked me to marry her! I was so happy and proud of us.

Diana: Fannie y Nikki decidieron casarse y tener una boda temática de su deporte favorito. Las invitaciones fueron en forma de boletos de básquetbol y un día antes de la ceremonia, ambas familias se organizaron en el equipo Fannie y equipo Nikki como si prepararan un partido.

Fannie: Before every NBA game, each player is introduced to the crowd. Nikki’s dad was the DJ at our wedding, so when we walked out to see our guests after our wedding ceremony, he played the song of an NBA team called the Chicago Bulls. He said, “Introducing…Nikki!” And then he said, “Introducing…Fannie!”. The wedding guests cheered when we came out. It was so much fun. I felt so grateful that basketball gave me friends, a community, and a wife.
