Diana: J.B. Waterman necesitaba un cambio. Era el 2012 y llevaba cinco años buscando su camino como actor profesional en Los Ángeles, haciendo malabares con trabajos esporádicos y actuaciones. Así que un día, se aventuró al famoso Observatorio Griffith de Los Ángeles, con sus tres cúpulas de cobre, o copper domes.

J.B.: I already knew about Griffith Observatory. When you’re in Hollywood, you can see it from everywhere. It’s a beautiful white building on top of a hill, and it has three copper domes. It was always very interesting to me. So, I finally decided to hike up to it and go inside. That was also the first time I ever went to the planetarium there.

Diana: Una de las principales atracciones dentro del Observatorio Griffith es el planetario, o planetarium. Es un gran teatro bajo una de esas cúpulas de cobre, donde actores presentan diferentes espectáculos sobre el universo. Ese día, J.B. compró una entrada para un espectáculo sobre la historia de la exploración espacial.

J.B.: I sat down in the planetarium dome. There were probably about 300 people there. Before the show started, they turned off the lights, and I could see stars on the dome ceiling. It suddenly felt like I was in space, with bright stars everywhere around me.

Diana: J.B. estaba fascinado por las estrellas y la sensación de flotar en el espacio. Pero había otra parte del espectáculo de la que no podía apartar los ojos.

J.B.: A performer stood in front of the audience. He held a bright ball which shined a light on his face. As he talked about space, he also talked about the things that make us human. It was an amazing and emotional show — it made me cry! As soon as it was over, I said to myself, “This is the best job in the world, and it would be perfect for me.”

Hoy, dos historias sobre grandes puntos de referencia de Los Ángeles: el Observatorio Griffith y el Dodger Stadium.

Diana: En 2007, J.B. Waterman, de 27 años, trabajaba como actor de teatro en Chicago cuando le ofrecieron un papel en una película en Los Ángeles.

J.B.: It wasn’t a big film. I knew that it wasn’t going to make me a rich and famous movie star, but I was ready for a change. So, I took the job, and I moved to L.A. After that film, I wanted to get more jobs in movies and TV. My goal was to be a real, professional actor.

Diana: Pero ser actor en Los Ángeles no era fácil. Tan solo encontrar trabajos de actuación era en sí mismo un trabajo. Ese primer año, J.B. envió su currículum y sus fotos a docenas de agentes, pero no tuvo mucha suerte. Así que, al igual que muchos actores de Los Ángeles, realizó todo tipo de trabajos secundarios para mantenerse.

J.B.: For example, I was paid to be in the audience of TV shows, and a guy once gave me money to build his furniture. Then I got a job as a dancer at kids’ parties. It was my job to get all of the kids to dance. It was really funny.

Diana: Durante estos primeros años en Los Ángeles, J.B. vio las cúpulas de cobre y la fachada blanca del majestuoso Observatorio Griffith casi todos los días, desde lejos. Pero aquella mañana de 2012, decidió hacer una excursión y verlo de cerca por primera vez.

J.B.: I hiked to the top of the hill, and there was the Griffith Observatory. I could see the whole city up there! There was Hollywood and the Hollywood sign, L.A.’s three big mountains, Dodger Stadium, and all of downtown L.A. I could even see the Pacific Ocean. It was an amazing view!

Diana: J.B. entró en el edificio. El Observatorio Griffith es una obra arquitectónica de gran importancia histórica. Construido en 1933, se ha convertido en un ícono de Los Ángeles. El edificio blanco de la colina es visible desde la mayor parte de Los Ángeles. Aparece en películas famosas y todos los alumnos de quinto grado de la ciudad hacen una excursión allí.

J.B.: Famous scenes from movies like Rebel Without a Cause and La La Land were filmed at the Griffith Observatory. It’s a very iconic place. And when I walked inside, it was just as amazing as I imagined. The first thing I saw was a huge room with high ceilings and beautiful paintings showing the connection between the earth and the sky. There was also a copy of Galileo’s first telescope, and another telescope that you could use to look at the sun.

Diana: Después de explorar todo el observatorio, J.B. compró una entrada para el planetario y tomó asiento en el teatro de la gran cúpula. Cuando las luces se atenuaron y comenzó el espectáculo, sintió que se transportaba a través de la galaxia, escuchando con detalle la historia de su descubrimiento.

J.B.: It was so interesting and beautiful. And as I watched the show, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to remind people that our world is an incredible place. I wanted them to feel what I felt in that moment. I wanted to be a performer at the observatory. But I knew it was going to be hard to get that job because there are just so many talented actors in this city.

Diana: De vuelta a casa, J.B. se puso en contacto con un amigo que conocía al curador del Observatorio Griffith. Y la suerte estuvo de su lado: casualmente estaban buscando un nuevo artista para el planetario. Tres meses después, J.B. consiguió una audición, o audition.

J.B.: I was nervous, but I was also excited. I walked into a small theater in the observatory. There were two men in the audience. I performed for them, and when I was done, they thanked me.

Diana: J.B. no pudo saber, por las expresiones de los hombres, si les había gustado su actuación o no. Así que esperó ansiosamente una respuesta. Finalmente, unos días después, J.B. recibió un correo electrónico de alguien del observatorio. Tenían malas noticias: Habían decidido dar el trabajo a otra persona.

J.B.: I was disappointed because I knew that a job like this was not always available. For months, I checked their website to see if they posted the job again. But that never happened. So, I tried to forget about it.

Diana: J.B. siguió haciendo su combinación de trabajos esporádicos y actuaciones de medio tiempo. Pero no era lo que quería hacer.

J.B.: I just couldn’t stop thinking about that job at the observatory. It was like being in love with someone. Finally, two years later, I checked the website, and the job was available again!

Diana: En 2015, J.B. se presentó por segunda vez a solicitar trabajo y consiguió su segunda audición.

J.B.: It was exactly the same as the first audition. Again, I didn’t know if they liked my performance.

Diana: Pasaron algunos días. Finalmente, J.B. recibió un correo de alguien del Observatorio Griffith. Hizo clic para abrirlo y…

J.B.: I finally got the job! When I started acting, my dream was to perform on Broadway. But things changed, and there was nothing I wanted more than the job at the observatory. I was so interested in nature and space, and I could change the way people saw the world.

Diana: J.B. fue contratado para representar un espectáculo del planetario llamado Centrados en el Universo, o Centered in the Universe, sobre cómo los humanos descubrieron el lugar de la Tierra en el universo. Pero primero tuvo que pasar por meses de entrenamiento.

J.B.: It was a one-man show that lasted 35 minutes with no break. And during the show, music played and there were images on the ceiling. I had to say everything at the right time. When the show started, I couldn’t make any mistakes. So, I had to practice a lot.

Diana: Finalmente, después de ensayar el espectáculo durante meses, llegó el momento de la primera actuación de J.B. Una tarde de marzo, condujo hasta el observatorio y estacionó su auto en el estacionamiento para empleados. Luego, atravesó la multitud de personas que habían acudido a ver el espectáculo del planetario y se coló entre los bastidores.

J.B.: The theater was crowded. They all paid to be there, and they were expecting a great performance. I was afraid that I wasn’t going to be good enough, so I was really nervous. Finally, it was time for the show to start. The whole theater became quiet. Then, I walked out to the middle of the room and welcomed everyone to the planetarium.

Diana: El teatro estaba lleno, pero en silencio. J.B. comenzó el espectáculo. Mientras hablaba, sostenía un globo amarillo brillante que iluminaba su rostro.

J.B.: There was something special about this audience. I had an opportunity to give them the experience that I had when I saw my first planetarium show. And if I did my job well, they would never forget their trip to Griffith Observatory. Then, the music started playing. Everyone looked up as the image of a sunset appeared, and then the room became dark except for the stars on the ceiling. I asked everyone to imagine what people thought when they looked at this sky hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Then I began the story of how humans started to understand the universe.

Diana: Treinta y cinco minutos más tarde, tras un viaje relámpago por el universo, las imágenes de la cúpula devolvieron al público a nuestra galaxia natal, la Vía Láctea. J.B. señaló que las estrellas, los planetas e incluso las personas están hechos de polvo de estrellas. Al terminar el espectáculo, el público aplaudió y J.B. respiró aliviado.

J.B.: After that first performance, I relaxed and started to enjoy the shows more. I’m excited to help people connect with the universe. The audiences are always so amazed. Sometimes kids want to take a photo with me after. And many people have told me that the show is very special to them.

Diana: J.B. aún se conmueve cuando actúa en los espectáculos del planetario. Y se conecta a los espectáculos de forma diferente dependiendo de lo que esté pasando en su propia vida.

Diana: Y siete años después, para J.B. el Observatorio Griffith no ha perdido nada de su magia.

J.B.: Sometimes, after a show, I leave the observatory and just look at the sunset over the city. It’s incredible. I feel so lucky that I get to perform at this iconic place in L.A. because I can share the amazing beauty of our universe with every visitor.

Diana: Desde la cima del Observatorio Griffith, se puede contemplar una magnífica vista de Los Ángeles, incluido otro lugar emblemático de la ciudad: el famoso estadio de los Dodgers, o Dodger Stadium. Cuando Mirtha Espinoza era una niña que crecía en Los Ángeles, le encantaba escuchar los partidos de los Dodgers en la radio con su padre.

Mirtha: On summer days, my dad usually turned on the radio and listened to the baseball game in Spanish. We didn’t have air conditioning, so my dad turned off the lights in the kitchen to make the room cooler. Then, we sat in the dark with the door open, just listening to the game. I asked my dad, “What’s happening now?” and “What does that mean?” and he explained everything. I loved learning about the game from him.

Diana: Luego, en 1983, cuando Mirtha tenía seis años, sus padres, su hermano y su hermana se subieron a un coche y condujeron durante una hora hasta el estadio de los Dodgers para ver un partido por primera vez. Estaba encantada de ver a todos los jugadores de los que había oído hablar por la radio… ¡en la vida real!

Mirtha: We didn’t have a lot of money, so this was a very special event. My mom brought burritos, and we all sat together and ate them. And my dad explained everything that was happening in the game, like he always did. I was so excited! But to be honest, I don’t remember a lot about the game or even who played. I just remember how happy I was to be there. For us, going to Dodger Stadium was like going to Disneyland.

Diana: El estadio de los Dodgers es un templo del béisbol de concreto azul y blanco con asientos de plástico duro para 56 000 espectadores. Desde que se inauguró en 1962, ha sido un lugar donde los angelinos, como se conocen los habitantes de Los Ángeles, se reúnen. Mirtha: Dodger Stadium is a really old stadium, but it’s very special. It’s close to all the cars and noise of L.A., but when you get into the stadium, you can see all the green hills, and you can almost forget you’re in a big city.

Diana: La familia de Mirtha vivió muchos momentos especiales dentro de ese estadio. Unas cuantas veces, llegaron temprano y los oficiales de policía que estaban de guardia les dieron tarjetas de béisbol de los Dodgers a Mirtha y a sus hermanos. En otra ocasión, su padre atrapó una pelota jonrón durante la práctica de bateo, o batting practice.

Mirtha: One time my dad was sitting in the right place during batting practice. And he was so proud because he caught the ball. After the game, the player who hit the ball even signed it for him! At that time, it was very easy to talk to the baseball players. If you arrived early before a game, while the players were practicing, some of them would talk to the crowd. That was so exciting for us!

Diana: A Mirtha le encantaba todo lo relacionado con los partidos de los Dodgers. Una vez que creció, empezó a ir a los partidos tan a menudo como podía. A veces iba con amigos y otras veces llevaba a su padre. El día del partido se convertía en un evento de todo un día, especialmente para los chicanos como Mirtha.

Mirtha: For a lot of Chicanos in L.A., Dodgers games are really important. There’s a park next to Dodger Stadium, so sometimes we go there before the game to eat carne asada and listen to musicians playing Mexican music. It’s not an official event, but everyone goes to the park before the game.

Diana: Con el paso de los años, los partidos de los Dodgers se convirtieron en el centro de la vida de Mirtha. En 2022, vivía en los suburbios, trabajaba en un instituto como terapeuta de salud mental y llevaba casi cuarenta años yendo al estadio. Tenía boletos de temporada y solía ir a docenas de partidos al año.

Mirtha: I know Dodger Stadium like it’s my home. I know where the best seats are, and all the players are so familiar to me that I feel I know them personally. It’s amazing because Dodger Stadium is big, but at the same time, it’s such a comfortable and welcoming place.

Diana: Mirtha trató de elegir partidos cuando su jugador favorito, Clayton Kershaw, estaba lanzando, o pitching. Fue a muchos partidos memorables, pero en abril de 2022, pudo ver uno verdaderamente histórico. Kershaw estaba a solo cuatro ponches, o strikeouts, de convertirse en el lanzador con más ponches en la historia de los Dodgers. Podría romper el récord, o break the record. Y su siguiente partido era en casa.

Mirtha: I went to the game with my friends that night. We were all excited because Clayton Kershaw was pitching and he only needed four strikeouts to break the record. The stadium was totally full, and everyone was nervous. The whole stadium was watching Kershaw.

Diana: Para la tercera entrada, Kershaw ya tenía tres ponches. Había empatado el récord. Ahora, sólo necesitaba un strikeout más para romperlo.

Mirtha: At that point, Kershaw had three strikeouts. Everyone stood up because they wanted to see him get his fourth strikeout to break the record.

Diana: Las primeras veces, el bateador acababa golpeando la pelota. Entonces el público volvía a sentarse y el juego continuaba. En la cuarta entrada, un bateador se acercó y Kershaw consiguió un strike, luego dos… El público volvió a ponerse de pie.

Mirtha: I was so nervous. Everyone was nervous. But then, Kershaw did it! He broke the record! Everyone was jumping and cheering. But right after Kershaw broke the record, he didn’t do anything. I think he just wanted to continue playing the game. But the crowd wouldn’t stop cheering. So finally, he took off his hat and held it in the air. It was his way of celebrating with the crowd.

Diana: Mirtha estaba encantada. Al día siguiente, llamó a su padre. Ya era demasiado mayor para ir a los partidos de los Dodgers en el estadio, pero seguía viéndolos por televisión. A él y a Mirtha les encantaba hablar de los grandes momentos.

Mirtha: My dad is older now and he forgets a lot of things. But he never forgets when the Dodgers are playing. After Kershaw broke the record, we talked on the phone, and he was so happy. I love talking with him about baseball like we’ve been doing for 40 years. It makes me feel like my dad’s little girl again.

Diana: Para Mirtha, ir al estadio de los Dodgers no es sólo ver béisbol. En realidad nunca lo fue. Se trata de unir a la familia y a los amigos, y a los angelinos. Se trata de sentirse en casa.

Mirtha: When my cousins visit, we go to a Dodgers game. When we have something to celebrate, we go to a Dodgers game. I’ve been to birthdays and wedding parties there. My friend’s daughter had photos for her quinceañera taken there. People even get engaged there. Dodger Stadium means something different to everyone. But it’s definitely a place that brings us all together.

Diana: Incluso cuando Mirtha no está en el estadio, puede sentir la presencia de los Dodgers en Los Ángeles. Murales gigantes con imágenes de los jugadores abundan en la ciudad. Y siempre que los Dodgers tienen un partido importante, Mirtha puede sentir la energía de la gente que la rodea.

Mirtha: The Dodgers are a really important part of L.A. On the first day of the baseball season, everyone in my neighborhood is always excited. When I go to work, everyone is wearing a Dodgers shirt. And when the Dodgers win a big game, everyone talks about it. When they lose, we’re all sad together. The team and its players are a part of our lives.

Diana: Hoy en día, Mirtha ha establecido un ritual para los días de partido. Para los partidos entre semana, va al estadio temprano, justo después del trabajo. Luego, entra en el segundo nivel, compra un hot dog y una cerveza, y se reúne con sus amigos. Justo antes de que empiece el partido, se sienta en su asiento, con vista al jardín derecho.

Mirtha: When I walk to my seat, it’s usually around sunset, when the sun is bright and beautiful. As the game starts, the sun slowly goes down, and all you see is 50,000 people under the stadium lights. Baseball can be kind of slow sometimes, so there’s a lot of time to think during a game. And I just feel peaceful there. To me, Dodger Stadium will always feel like home.
