Diana: Era el año 1966 y Linda Madon, de veinte años, estaba en el concierto de su vida. Más de 24 000 fans estaban al borde de sus asientos en un enorme estadio de Cleveland, Ohio. Todos se morían por ver a una de las bandas de rock and roll más legendarias de todos los tiempos: Los Beatles.

Linda: The first bands who played at the concert were good, but everyone was there to see The Beatles. As soon as John, Paul, George, and Ringo stepped on stage, the crowd started screaming, and some people were crying. It was so loud that it was hard to hear the music! But it was a very important moment for a lot of us.

Diana: Pero Linda tuvo suerte… Estaba sentada justo al lado de un parlante en el segundo nivel del estadio. Era lejos del escenario, pero Linda estaba preparada con un par de binoculares.

Linda: I could see The Beatles very clearly with my binoculars. It was amazing! They were wearing matching dark green suits, and they sounded incredible. I loved every second. Everything was perfect, until suddenly, hundreds of fans ran to the stage.

Diana: Era 1964 cuando Linda Madon escuchó por primera vez a Los Beatles en la radio. Era una estudiante de secundaria en Toledo, Ohio, y se enamoró inmediatamente. Compró todos sus discos, e incluso serigrafió su propia mercancía, o merchandise, de Los Beatles: camisetas con cuatro caras: John, Paul, George y Ringo.

Linda: There wasn’t a lot of Beatles merchandise at that time, so I decided to make my own t-shirts. I used the black-and-white image from their album “Meet The Beatles.” I made the t-shirts during art class, and then I sold them to my friends. Sometimes my friends brought me old t-shirts, and I printed the image on them.

Diana: Muchos jóvenes estadounidenses como Linda estaban obsesionados con Los Beatles en los años sesenta. No se parecían a nada de lo que había. Antes de que aparecieran en escena, Linda sentía que la música popular en Estados Unidos era un poco aburrida.

Linda: When I was growing up, I wasn’t interested in most popular music. But then, The Beatles’ music came to the U.S. They sang together in harmony, the music was fast, and their lyrics were interesting. It changed everything for me.

Diana: Este periodo, a mediados de la década de 1960, fue conocido como “La Invasión Británica”, cuando los grupos musicales populares del Reino Unido se apoderaron de la escena musical estadounidense. Linda: The boys at my school had long hair because they wanted to look like The Beatles, and everyone started to wear colorful and bright clothing. Girls started wearing short skirts and high socks. A lot of people thought it was shocking. And a lot of parents, including my own, really didn’t like it.

Diana: Linda procedía de una familia católica de clase trabajadora y sus padres conservadores seguían escuchando la música clásica estadounidense de los años cuarenta, como Frank Sinatra y Dean Martin. La música de Los Beatles no solo les sonaba diferente. Linda: During the Vietnam War, I went to protests against the war. I also participated in events for racial equality. We were trying to make big changes in the world, and The Beatles were part of that. John Lennon once said that all The Beatles’ songs were anti-war songs. You can hear that message in songs like “Revolution,” which was about the violence happening in the world at that time. A lot of young people in the U.S. were against that violence.

Diana: Al terminar el colegio, Linda estudiaba en el Instituto de Arte de Cleveland y vivía en la ciudad. Un día, su amigo la llamó a su teléfono fijo para decirle que había conseguido dos entradas para ver a Los Beatles en el Estadio Municipal de Cleveland ese verano. ¡Ella no podía creerlo!

Linda: Back then, it was really hard to get concert tickets. If you wanted good seats, you had to wait at the place where they were selling the tickets — sometimes for days! That’s what my friend did to get The Beatles’ tickets. I was so excited, so of course I told him that I wanted to come! Our tickets were five dollars and fifty cents, which is much cheaper than ticket prices now.

Diana: Los Beatles eran tan populares que los boletos para sus conciertos siempre se agotaban, ¡aún en enormes estadios de hasta 50 000 asientos! En aquella época, esto era sin precedentes.

Linda: I waited all summer for that concert. When the day finally arrived, I put on a short skirt and my favorite tall boots. I also brought binoculars because in the 1960s, concerts didn’t have huge video screens. So, if your seat was far from the stage, it was hard to see the performance.

Diana: Linda y su amigo caminaron desde el centro de Cleveland hasta el estadio de béisbol. Había hordas de jóvenes como ellos, todos dirigiéndose al mismo lugar. Linda: This was a big stadium, and thousands of people were there. You could feel the energy. Everyone was incredibly excited for the show. People brought their Beatles posters with them, and they made signs that said things like “Cleveland loves The Beatles.” Some people even had cameras to take photos.

Diana: Desde donde Linda estaba sentada, podía ver el pequeño escenario, a más de sesenta metros de distancia. El resto del campo estaba vacío, salvo por una larga fila de policías que estaban allí para controlar a la multitud.

Linda: When John, Paul, George, and Ringo finally walked onto the stage, it was the moment everyone was waiting for. People were crying and screaming. It was a big moment for me too, but I didn’t scream. I was so excited that I was completely silent. I couldn’t believe that I was there, in the same stadium as The Beatles!

Diana: En esos días, los sistemas de sonido eran mucho más pequeños y no tan ruidosos como ahora. Además, había miles de fans gritando. Así que muchos de los asistentes al concierto de aquel día no podían oír la música en absoluto. Pero Linda tuvo suerte. Estaba sentada justo al lado de un altavoz y pudo escuchar cada nota.

Linda: They were amazing! They sounded just like they did on their albums. In fact, my friend and I thought they sounded too perfect, like it was a recording. But they were actually singing! They were just really good musicians.

Diana: Los Beatles incluso tocaron la canción favorita de Linda: “Baby’s in Black”. El negro era su color favorito y le encantaba la forma en que el grupo cantaba la letra en perfecta armonía. Para ella, fue lo mejor del concierto.

Linda: They finished playing my favorite song, and it was a beautiful moment. And then suddenly… Some fans were so excited that they jumped out of their seats and started running to the stage. It was total chaos. The Beatles had to run to a safe place!

Concert Announcer: … the crowds have gone berserk… but they’ve managed to get The Beatles in safely… I’m sure the whole show is going to stop now…

Diana: “BeatleMania” es como los medios de comunicación llamaron al fenómeno de la cultura pop que rodeaba a Los Beatles y su salvaje energía estaba en plena exhibición en Cleveland. Tras una media hora de confusión, algunos fans decidieron irse a casa. Linda no estaba dispuesta a rendirse.

Linda: Everyone was so annoyed at those fans who ran to the stage. I was angry too, but I didn’t want to leave. I waited so long for that concert, and we had great seats. I was willing to wait all year for The Beatles to come back to the stage! And then, almost an hour later, the crowd finally calmed down, and The Beatles came back! They just started playing again like nothing happened.

Diana: Linda se dio cuenta de que el público se estaba autocontrolando: cada vez que alguien intentaba saltar la valla, otros aficionados lo volvían a meter dentro, sabiendo que todo se acabaría si alguien volvía a pisar ese campo.

Linda: When the concert was over, I noticed that there was a lot of grass missing from the field. Fans were taking it home with them as a souvenir! They wanted to remember that concert. In fact, that year, in 1966, The Beatles completely stopped playing concerts. I just feel lucky that I was there. I’m 76 years old now, and when I meet young Beatles fans, I tell them I saw them in concert. They’re so impressed! They ask me a lot of questions because they’re excited to meet someone who was a part of that piece of history.

Diana: Avancemos 45 años hasta 2011: de Los Beatles a Beyoncé. En la ciudad de Nueva York, Maverick Flood, de diecisiete años, estaba viendo la televisión en la sala de su casa cuando quedó hipnotizado por la actuación de una de las artistas más emblemáticas de nuestro tiempo.

Maverick: Beyoncé is so talented. She’s an amazing dancer and singer, and her lyrics are all about making women feel confident and powerful. The first time I saw her perform on TV, I fell in love with her.

Diana: La cantante y ganadora de 28 Grammys, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, actuaba en una entrega de premios. Maverick se sintió atraído por sus movimientos de baile, su voz y, sobre todo, su estilo.

Maverick: She was wearing this amazing shiny gold top, and she looked so confident when she walked across the stage. After I saw her dance, I tried to dance just like her. And then I told my family, “Okay, I need to go to her concert.”

Diana: Después de esa noche, Maverick se perdió en videos de YouTube, viendo todos los vídeos musicales y actuaciones de Beyoncé que pudo encontrar.

Maverick: Her music videos were amazing, but I noticed that she performed really well during her live shows, too. I watched the audience in the videos, and they were having so much fun. I thought, “I want to experience that!”

Maverick: As soon as the tickets went on sale, I went online and tried to buy one. But all of the tickets were sold in 22 seconds! So I couldn’t get one. I was so disappointed. There were signs all over New York City and commercials were constantly on TV. It was a huge event, but I couldn’t go! I was really sad.

Diana: No fue hasta el año siguiente cuando Maverick tuvo otra oportunidad de ver en concierto a “Queen B”, que es el apodo favorito de los fans de Beyoncé. Pero esta vez no iba a dejar escapar la oportunidad.

Maverick: She made a post on Facebook about her new concert, and I knew that I had to get a ticket this time. So, as soon as tickets went on sale, I was ready, and I got one! And when I got the email that said that I had a ticket, I can’t explain how excited I was. My dream became a reality!

Diana: Maverick pasó las siguientes semanas escuchando todos los discos de Beyoncé. También quería estar guapo para el concierto, así que se compró una nueva sudadera blanca de Adidas para estrenar. Maverick: I knew it was going to be an incredible experience. My whole family wanted to support me, so they came along for the trip even though they didn’t have tickets. We all got in the car and drove to Atlantic City to stay in a hotel. On the morning of the show, I was so excited. I thought, “OK, it’s time!”

Diana: Era el primer concierto de Maverick, y más aún, su primer concierto de Beyoncé. No sabía qué esperar y estaría solo. Cuando Maverick llegó al lugar del concierto, su corazón latía con fuerza en el pecho.

Maverick: I was nervous. I was the only one who wasn’t wearing Beyoncé merchandise. I’m pretty shy, but everyone was super nice, and they asked me about my favorite Beyoncé songs.

Maverick: When the doors finally opened, I was still really nervous as I went to find my seat. I wasn’t in the front row, but I was close enough to the stage that I could see everything. The show wasn’t going to start for a few hours, but I wanted to be there really early, so I waited.

Diana: Recorrió el teatro para ver cómo era la vista desde el balcón y los asientos del fondo. Y lo fotografió todo: el escenario, las cortinas y los instrumentos. Maverick: I didn’t know what to do! For the first few minutes, I was just silent. I could hear everyone else around me screaming, but I just couldn’t believe I was there, seeing Beyoncé with my own eyes. I watched all of her performances online, and now we were standing in the same room! Then finally, I just started screaming.

Diana: Durante dos horas, Maverick cantó todas las letras mientras Beyoncé interpretaba sus mayores éxitos: “End of Time”, “Single Ladies”, “Baby Boy”… El confeti plateado cayó de las vigas y los efectos especiales iluminaron el escenario. Beyoncé llevaba un traje brillante con incrustaciones de cristales y un largo flequillo plateado.

Maverick: Her outfit was incredible. It’s still one of my favorite outfits that she’s ever worn because she was wearing it the first time I saw her live. I took a photo of the outfit and it was the background on my phone for years. She changed her clothes several times during the show, and every outfit was just as amazing as the first one.

Diana: La mayoría de los conciertos de Beyoncé se celebran en grandes estadios. Pero este concierto fue en un teatro con capacidad para unas 5000 personas. Así que Maverick pudo estar más cerca del escenario.

Maverick: I recorded the entire concert on my phone, and I showed it to my family when I got back to the hotel. I still couldn’t believe that I saw her perform, and I watched the video a dozen times. After that night, I felt like I achieved my goal. But then one or two weeks later, I thought, “I want to experience that again!”

Diana: Y lo ha hecho! En la última década, Maverick ha asistido a treinta y seis conciertos de Beyoncé. Incluso ha viajado a tres continentes diferentes para verla en lugares como Sudáfrica y el Reino Unido.

Maverick: Her concerts really have everything. The dancing and the outfits are amazing, and Beyoncé sounds incredible. I’ve seen her perform around the world, and her show is different in each city. The shows are even better when they’re in a city that’s special to Beyoncé, like Houston, Texas, where she was born.

Diana: Maverick planea casi todas sus vacaciones en torno a los conciertos de Beyoncé, donde conoce a muchos otros fans como él. De hecho, así es como ha conocido a sus mejores amigos.

Maverick: I always meet new people at shows, and then we plan to meet again at the next show. We also make plans to do things outside of concerts. For example, we’ll watch something special together, like a new documentary about her life. And we’re all friends on social media.

Maverick: When I’m talking to my friends at a show, sometimes I notice other people who want to be included, but maybe they’re really shy. I used to feel the same way, so I always say hello. I ask them where they’re sitting and if it’s their first concert. Seeing Beyoncé is a special experience, and I want everyone to feel welcome!
