Helena: Sandy Purdon nunca vai esquecer do que aconteceu no dia 4 de julho de 2012. Era o aniversário número 236 da declaração de independência dos Estados Unidos, e Sandy foi o diretor do show anual de queima de fogos de artifício, ou fireworks, na baía de San Diego, na Califórnia.

Sandy: I created a show for the San Diego Bay because it’s a beautiful natural theater, with lots of open space and spectacular views. Hundreds of thousands of people were outside, waiting for the show to start.

Helena: A produção de uma queima de fogos dessa proporção precisa de patrocinadores, ou sponsors, que paguem pelo evento. Como de costume, na noite dos fogos, vários desses patrocinadores se reuniram na casa de Sandy pra acompanhar o espetáculo.

Sandy: Everyone was having a great time. People were drinking wine and chatting while enjoying the views. I was talking to the guests, who were sponsors of the event and government officials in San Diego. Then suddenly, we saw an explosion on the water. But it wasn’t time for the fireworks to start yet…

No episódio de hoje, vamos ouvir duas histórias de como se comemora o dia 4 de Julho, o Dia da Independência dos Estados Unidos da América.

Sandy começou a se interessar por fogos de artifício no verão de 2000. Ele já morava há 30 anos em San Diego, que fica no sul da Califórnia. Mas foi naquele ano que ele notou que vivia em uma das poucas cidades importantes dos Estados Unidos que não tinha uma queima de fogos de artifício no 4 de julho.

Sandy: My wife and I were building a house with a view of the San Diego Bay, and we realized that there wasn’t a fireworks show in that area on the 4th of July. I knew that the San Diego Bay would be the perfect place for a lot of people to see a big fireworks show.

Helena: Sandy trabalhava no setor imobiliário e era dono de uma marina na baía. Ele também era veterano dos Marine Corps, os fuzileiros navais dos Estados Unidos, e serviu na Guerra do Vietnã. Por isso, o 4 de Julho sempre foi muito importante pra ele.

Sandy: The 4th of July celebration is really important to me. I was always pretty patriotic, but after I was in the Marine Corps for nine years, I felt even more patriotic. I admit that I get a little sentimental every 4th of July.

Helena: A primeira comemoração do 4 de Julho aconteceu em 1777, na Filadélfia, um ano depois da declaração da independência. E já naquela época, a celebração teve queima de fogos de artifício. Hoje, cidades do país inteiro gastam muito dinheiro em grandiosos espetáculos com fogos. Sandy também queria que seu evento fosse impressionante. Ele deu o nome de “Big Bay Boom”, ou “A Explosão da Grande Baía”.

Sandy: I named the show in honor of one of San Diego’s bays, called “The Big Bay.” I wanted to create a show that people could see on land or water. The fireworks were going to cost about $250,000 in total.

Helena: Em 2001, o sonho de Sandy virou realidade. O Big Bay Boom foi transmitido em canais de notícias e estações de rádio.

Centenas de milhares de pessoas se reuniram pra ver o show. Durante os 10 anos seguintes, Sandy continuou organizando a queima de fogos e tudo sempre deu certo. Até 2012, quando o espetáculo explodiu… literalmente.

Sandy: Every year, we have a party at my house to watch the fireworks show. People start arriving at 7:00 pm. The guests include sponsors and politicians. There’s a bar for cocktails, and my wife also always makes a lot of amazing desserts. It’s a great party. In 2012, around 135 people came.

Helena: O show ia ser deslumbrante. Os fogos tinham sido projetados pra criar todo tipo de formas e efeitos: globos de pista de dança, corações, estrelas, emoticons e até salgueiros-chorões. A queima ia durar 20 minutos, e um computador ia cronometrar tudo.

Sandy: The show was going to start at 9:00 pm. and last for around 20 minutes. All the guests were waiting with glasses of wine in their hands. I turned up the radio and outdoor speakers, and someone from the local TV station started filming. We were ready for the show to begin, and we started counting down from ten.

Helena: Mas antes de terminar a contagem regressiva, Sandy viu uma grande explosão nas barcaças, ou barges, que tavam ancoradas na baía.

Sandy: I wasn’t even looking at the bay or the barges yet. But suddenly, I heard explosions and I could see very intense, bright lights on the barges. I quickly moved to a window where I had a good view of the bay and I thought, “We have a huge problem here.”

Helena: Sandy saiu da parte da casa onde seus convidados estavam reunidos e foi pro escritório ligar pro produtor dos fogos de artifício, que era o responsável por coordenar o espetáculo.

Sandy: I quickly tried to find out what happened. I called our fireworks producer, but I didn’t get an answer. I knew he was probably pretty busy because he needed to make sure that everyone was safe. But I was anxious to talk to him.

Helena: A maior preocupação de Sandy era que alguém tivesse ficado ferido. Mas quando ele finalmente conseguiu falar com a empresa de fogos, sentiu um grande alívio.

Sandy: After 20 minutes, I finally talked to the fireworks producer. He told me that no one was hurt, but they were not sure what happened. They guessed that it was a computer error. All of the fireworks for the Big Bay Boom exploded at the same time.

Helena: Já sabendo que 250 mil dólares em fogos tinham explodido tudo de uma vez, Sandy voltou pra festa. Os convidados estavam se perguntando o que tinha acontecido.

Sandy: At first, some of the guests thought it was just the introduction to the show. They said things like, “If that was the introduction, then the real show will be incredible!” But then I told them that all the fireworks exploded and the show was over.

Helena: Sandy tava numa situação muito delicada: sua casa tava cheia de gente importante de San Diego e vários dos convidados tinham pagado pelo show de fogos… que, num acidente, explodiu tudo de uma vez.

Sandy: The guests stayed for about an hour. They had a lot to talk about! Everyone was kind, though — I mean, mistakes happen. But it was obviously very embarrassing. I wanted to just hide under my desk and never come out.

Helena: Enquanto isso, a queima de fogos de San Diego viralizava no mundo todo, graças às redes sociais.

Sandy: Someone who filmed the event put their video on YouTube and soon, our story went viral. I responded to hundreds of media interviews over the next few days. My sister was on a boat in the city of St. Petersburg, in Russia, and even she heard about it! She emailed me and asked, “Was that your show?”

Helena: Sandy tava muito envergonhado. Mas, depois de alguns dias, aconteceu algo surpreendente. Ele começou a receber mensagens de pessoas que tinham amado aquela queima de fogos.

Sandy: A lot of people said that they always wanted to see all of the fireworks explode at the same time. So, they were excited that they actually saw it happen.

Helena: O Big Bay Boom ficou muito famoso. E o mundo todo tava falando nisso.

Sandy: Everyone knew about our fireworks show after that day. People still talk about it, and now we laugh about it. More people come to the show now, and we even have a lot more sponsors. I never thought that a problem with the show could be such a positive thing. So even though the Big Bay Boom didn’t go like I planned, it was still a huge success!

Helena: Os fogos de artifício são apenas uma das tradições importantes do Dia da Independência nos Estados Unidos, mas existem várias outras, como as cerimônias de naturalização pra novos cidadãos. Todo ano, em cidades de todo o país, o governo organiza centenas de cerimônias de naturalização pra milhares de pessoas. Athina Patac teve a sua cerimônia no dia 4 de julho de 2017. Pra ela, esse dia marcou o fim de um processo de mais de 20 anos pra se tornar cidadã norte-americana. Ela veio das Filipinas pros Estados Unidos quando tinha só 4 anos.

Athina: My mom, brother, and I flew to the U.S. from the Philippines. It was a 23-hour flight, and I was scared. It was my first time on a plane, and I didn’t speak any English. Everything was new and surprising. I was very anxious.

Helena: O pai de Athina já tava nos Estados Unidos; ele tinha conseguido um visto de trabalho e tinha viajado algumas semanas antes. Agora, finalmente, todos estavam juntos.

Athina: When I stepped out of the airplane, I remember thinking about how the country smelled. It smelled different than the Philippines. I was still anxious when we landed, but when I saw my dad waiting at the airport, I was so excited and I immediately felt comfortable.

Helena: A família de Athina foi viver em Fort Washington, Maryland, nos arredores da capital do país. Seus pais matricularam ela numa escola local. Ela cresceu como a maioria das crianças norte-americanas. Mas às vezes alguma coisa a fazia lembrar de que ela não tinha nascido nos Estados Unidos.

Athina: At first, I didn’t speak English very well, and I had a strong accent until I was 11 or 12. The way I spoke made everyone remember that I was from somewhere else. I really tried to hide it. Kids asked me, “Where are you from?” or “Why do you sound like that?” I was just trying to be like everyone else.

Helena: E uma parte importante dessa adaptação eram as comemorações dos feriados norte-americanos, como o 4 de Julho.

Athina: I remember kids playing outside in my neighborhood, and the smell of barbecues early in the morning. We always went on a picnic to watch the fireworks, at a place close to our home. There, we could see the Potomac River and all of the fireworks shows over the city of Washington, D.C. The most exciting part was being outside at night, because each year, there were many different fireworks shows. It felt like a movie.

Helena: Mas Athina não via um significado especial nesse dia quando era pequena. Pra ela, era um feriado qualquer.

Athina: When I was a kid, the 4th of July was just a fun holiday when I spent time with my family. I learned about the holiday in school, but I never knew what it symbolized until I was older. Now I understand that the 4th of July is the day that the U.S. finally became a democracy.

Helena: Mas, à medida em que foi ficando mais velha, Athina começou a entender que, como não era cidadã americana, não tinha muitos dos direitos e liberdades que são celebrados no 4 de Julho. Isso ficou mais claro durante as eleições de 2016.

Athina: After I saw the candidates and the results of the 2016 election, I really wanted to become a U.S. citizen and to be able to vote. I wasn’t happy with the election results, and so I thought, “I need to be a part of this, and I need to vote in the next election.”

Helena: Athina já tinha dado entrada no pedido de cidadania alguns anos antes, após se casar com um cidadão norte-americano em 2013. Mas ainda não tinha recebido nenhuma resposta do governo, o que era bem comum. Muitos processos de cidadania demoram anos. Mas agora, Athina tava pensando que, talvez, seu pedido tivesse sido… negado.

Athina: It was taking a long time, and I became very nervous. I thought maybe my application was delayed because of the political situation at the time. This was when Donald Trump was President, and of course, he was famously anti-immigrant. I worried all about the different reasons immigration officials might not accept my application.

Helena: Athina revisou páginas e mais páginas da papelada e esperou. Finalmente, chegou uma notícia pelos correios: ela tinha recebido uma data pra entrevista com os oficiais de imigração, que é o primeiro passo no processo pra conseguir a cidadania norte-americana.

Athina: They gave me a book with 100 questions that I had to study. The questions were about the obligations of U.S. citizens. During the test, they were going to ask me ten questions.

Helena: Athina tava nervosa, então ela estudou o máximo que pôde.

Athina: I am not good at taking tests. I was extremely nervous because it was oral instead of written. I read that book of questions 100 times, and I studied 3 times a day. We had to be able to answer questions about the Constitution and U.S. history. My husband helped me. I was lucky because I already learned a lot of things in school like, “If the President dies, then who becomes the next President?”

Helena: No dia da prova, Athina foi pro escritório de imigração e sentou na sala de espera com outras 50 pessoas.

Athina: Surprisingly, the test was fast. It only took five minutes! I think sitting in the waiting room took longer than the test.

Helena: A prova foi muito rápida. Athina tava ansiosa, pensando no que podia acontecer se ela não fosse aprovada.

Athina: …and then the interviewer told me that I passed! I cried when I got into the car. It was such a long process. It took years and years to get to that point, and it was over in five minutes. It was amazing!

Helena: O último passo pra se tornar cidadã foi a cerimônia de naturalização, em que os novos cidadãos juram lealdade aos Estados Unidos.

Athina: After I passed my test, I went out and celebrated with my husband. They told me that my date for naturalization was July 4th, 2017, at Monticello.

Helena: Monticello é a mansão do terceiro presidente dos Estados Unidos, Thomas Jefferson, um dos autores da declaração de independência. O legado de Jefferson é… complexo, pois ele foi um dos fundadores da nação, mas também tinha escravos. Hoje em dia, Monticello é um museu onde se pode conhecer um pouco mais sobre o ex-chefe de Estado e também sobre a triste história da escravidão nas plantações da região.

Athina: Monticello is in a very remote location. You have to drive through a forest to get there. It’s a beautiful area, with incredible old buildings and memorials. But I had a surreal moment when I was standing on the plantation and I thought about the history of the place. It was difficult to imagine all of the horrible things that happened there, under the same trees that are still there now.

Helena: Ela se tornou cidadã norte-americana ali em Monticello, que tinha todo esse passado sombrio da escravidão. Isso acabou sendo um lembrete do motivo pelo qual Athina tava virando cidadã: pra poder contribuir e fazer do país um lugar mais justo.

Athina: When we arrived, a group of people welcomed us. It was hot and humid that day, and I was glad I was dressed in light clothes. I wore a blue dress, sandals with the U.S. flag on them, and red earrings. After we climbed the hill to get to the ceremony, there was a lot of excitement in the air.

Helena: Cerca de 50 pessoas fizeram o juramento, ou took the oath, junto com Athina, todas acompanhadas por seus amigos e familiares. Depois da cerimônia, Athina se sentiu bem diferente de quando passou na prova.

Athina: I cried after I passed my test. But after I took the oath, I felt like I could relax. I thought, “I finally made it. I am here.” I felt like I had more power and more influence, and I felt like I finally belonged in this country.

Helena: Diferente dos outros anos, Athina não conseguiu ficar acordada pra ver a queima de fogos… Ela tava muito cansada! Mas toda essa experiência fez ela ver o 4 de Julho com outros olhos.

Athina: Now I know what I’m celebrating on the 4th of July. I understand the real meaning of the holiday. And I can explain it to my kids too, so they will grow up knowing the history of their country. It’s an important day for the U.S., but it’s also the day that I became a naturalized citizen. And the day that I became a part of something bigger than myself.

Helena: Athina Patac vive na Virginia com seu marido e dois filhos. Ela ficou emocionada ao votar nas eleições presidenciais de 2020.
