Ariana: Hi, listeners! A quick note before we begin. This season of the Duolingo French Podcast is serialized. So if you haven’t heard the previous episodes yet, go back and listen to them first.

Ariana: October 2nd, 1925 — Opening night of Josephine’s show. In the darkened theater, audience members took their seats.

Josephine: Mon cœur battait tellement vite. Comment est-ce-que le public allait m’accueillir ? Tout Paris était là, et je voulais leur montrer un spectacle qu’ils n’oublieraient jamais. Ce moment allait peut-être changer ma vie.

Ariana: It was a revue-style show, with multiple dance numbers, all leading to the breathtaking finale: Josephine’s solo. She was draped over her partner’s back and carried onstage. Silently, she slid down to the floor, barefoot. That’s when everyone realized she was wearing some artistically placed feathers… and nothing else. She began to dance, gradually picking up speed and swinging her graceful body with an astonishing intensity.

Josephine: C’était comme si la musique avait pris le contrôle de mon corps. Et puis, je n’étais pas vraiment nue, simplement, je ne portais pas de vêtements ! Je dansais, je sautais, je riais ! Je ne voyais plus rien autour. Le public, les lumières, le stress : tout ça avait disparu. Un sentiment de liberté traversait tout mon corps.

Ariana: Josephine danced with an abandon that stunned the audience. Yes, there were other acts in Paris nightclubs with nude dance numbers, but Parisians had never seen anything like Josephine’s magnetic energy before.

Josephine: À la fin du spectacle, le public était debout. Bien sûr, certaines personnes n’avaient pas aimé le spectacle, et avaient même quitté la salle, choquées. Ariana: The following morning, Josephine slept in past noon. When she emerged from her hotel room, there was a stack of newspapers waiting at her door. She grabbed one, even though she was nervous to read the reviews. In the U-S, the critics could be harsh with Black performers, almost impossible to win over.

Josephine: Quand j’ai vu les titres des journaux, je n’en croyais pas mes yeux ! Un journal disait : « Qui est cette danseuse drôle et sensuelle qui a éclipsé toute la troupe ? ». « Tous les yeux étaient tournés sur une belle inconnue, Josephine Baker. » C’était fou !

Ariana: Josephine tore through the rest of the newspapers. The critics were raving: Paris loved Josephine.

Josephine: Le spectacle était un succès ! Les gens connaissaient mon nom ! J’avais l’impression d’être dans un rêve, et que j’allais finir par me réveiller.

Ariana: At just 19 years old, Josephine had become the darling of Paris overnight. Her show was originally booked for two weeks, but now it kept getting extended! It took Josephine no time at all to adjust to her new, glamorous life. Every night after the curtains closed, she and other dancers headed to the trendy, bohemian neighborhoods of the time: Montmartre and Montparnasse.

Josephine: C’était les deux quartiers les plus vivants de l’époque. C’est là que tous les artistes se retrouvaient : Jean Cocteau, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein. On allait danser dans les clubs de la place Pigalle ou à Montparnasse et on y faisait la fête jusqu’au matin. On était jeunes, alors on n’était jamais fatigués !

Ariana: Josephine often had her latest date by her side… boyfriends, girlfriends, she loved all romance! One night, she went to a nightclub wearing a tight black dress and a green choker around her neck. As soon as she stepped into the room, she was surrounded by admirers.

Admirers: « Josephine ! Josephine ! », « Un autographe, s’il vous plaît ! ».

Josephine: Être le centre de l’attention, être admirée, parfois même adorée, c’était nouveau pour moi. Au début, c'était bizarre… Mais je m’y suis rapidement habituée ! J’ai même fini par aimer ça ! Entre les Français et moi, c’était une véritable histoire d’amour.

Ariana: A tall man with movie-star looks made his way towards Josephine. It was the American writer Ernest Hemingway.

Hemingway: Josephine, ma chère. Tu es la femme la plus sensationnelle que j’aie vue de ma vie.

Josephine: Oh, Ernest ! Comment vas-tu ?

Hemingway: Toujours bien, quand je te vois. Viens danser avec moi.

Ariana: Josephine and Hemingway glided across the dance floor, laughing and chatting. But suddenly, his eyes widened in shock.

Hemingway: Mais, Josephine, qu’est-ce que tu as autour du cou ? Ton collier… il bouge !

Ariana: Josephine’s green necklace was moving!

Josephine: Mon collier ? Ah ! C’est mon petit serpent. Il est mignon, n’est-ce pas ? Ne t’inquiète pas, il n’est pas méchant !

Ariana: Hemingway had just discovered Josephine’s love for unusual animal companions. Some nights, she liked to go out with a snake wrapped around her neck.

Josephine: À cette époque-là, je me sentais incroyablement libre. Libre ! C’est le plus beau mot que je connaisse. Paris m’avait offert quelque chose de très précieux : la confiance en moi.

Ariana: In her new life in Paris, Josephine was savvy about finding mentors and managers to help promote her career. After all, she had big dreams of bringing her art to more and more people. And her connections paid off: Soon, she was offered a starring role in a new show at Les Folies Bergères, one of the oldest and most famous music-halls in Paris. As always, Josephine rehearsed every last detail.

Choreographer: Et un, deux, trois et quatre ! Cinq, six, sept et huit ! Plus haut la jambe ! Voilà, comme ça !

Josephine: Comme ça ?

Choreographer: Magnifique, Josephine !

Ariana: At the dress rehearsal, Josephine was wearing a new outfit made by her costume designer, son costumier. It didn’t have any traditional cabaret feathers or plumes. But the world would remember this costume forever: a string of pearls, wrist and ankle cuffs, and a skirt made of 16 jewel-encrusted bananas.

Josephine: Ah, la célèbre ceinture de bananes ! Mon costumier et moi, on voulait s’amuser un peu. Alors on a eu l’idée de fabriquer une jupe avec des fausses bananes. Je voulais quelque chose de différent, que personne n’avait jamais vu. À l’époque, toutes les danseuses de cabaret portaient des plumes… Alors que les bananes, c’était nouveau ! C’était très audacieux, parce que c’était à la fois provoquant et tellement drôle !

Ariana: As Josephine danced, the bananas swayed with the movement of her hips. She began to make her signature funny faces at the producers and stagehands watching the rehearsal. She puckered her lips, puffed up her cheeks, and crossed her eyes, elle louchait. Everyone thought it was hilarious!

Josephine: Je me pliais dans tous les sens, je louchais, je sautais partout ! En même temps que je dansais ! J'adorais faire le clown et faire rire mon public ! J’aimais voir la surprise, puis le bonheur sur le visage des gens. Je crois qu’ils ne savaient pas s’ils devaient rire ou être charmés. Mais une chose était certaine : ils n’avaient jamais vu ça !

Ariana: But one person in the back of the theater wasn’t laughing: Jacques-Charles — the famous producer who suggested Josephine do her big, scandalous number the year before. She wasn’t working with him anymore, but he was curious to see her next show. After the rehearsal, he joined everyone else as they gathered in Josephine's dressing room. Josephine sat in front of a dressing table framed with lightbulbs. She wiped off her stage makeup as she chatted with other members of the cast.

Voice A: Ça va être un énorme succès !

Voice B: Bravo Josephine, quel spectacle !

Josephine: Oh, merci ! C’est tellement gentil.

Ariana: Jacques-Charles watched from the sidelines. Then he forced a fake smile and approached Josephine. Everyone else fell quiet, making way for the powerful producer.

Jacques-Charles: Mais oui, Josephine, vous êtes magnifique. Ce que vous proposez, c’est exactement ce que le public veut. J’ai eu beaucoup d’influence sur vous, n’est-ce pas ? Votre danse, c’est exactement celle que je vous ai apprise. On peut dire que… je vous ai inventée ! J’ai inventé Josephine Baker ! Ah !

Ariana: Josephine stopped in her tracks. She slowly turned towards Jacques-Charles, her eyes flashed with anger.

Josephine: Monsieur Jacques-Charles, vous croyez vraiment que vous m’avez inventée ? Ah, quelle idée ! Je me suis inventée toute seule. Et je n’ai besoin de personne pour me dire comment danser. Alors soyez gentil, Monsieur, tenez-moi mon manteau !

Ariana: The other dancers couldn’t believe it. Josephine was standing up to the most powerful producer in Paris, someone who could make or break their careers.

Josephine: J’avais travaillé très dur pour en arriver là. Et pourtant, je devais encore prouver que c’était grâce à mon travail, et pas à celui de quelqu’un d’autre.

Ariana: Josephine turned and strode out of the theater. The entire car ride home, she stared intently at the city lights. In France, she’d found the freedom to be completely herself for the first time in her life. But she knew she would have to keep working hard, if she wanted to build a career on her own terms, and be known as a true artist.

Josephine: Ce soir-là, j’ai compris deux choses. La première, c’est que je ne voulais pas juste danser sur scène. Je voulais faire plus que ça. J’avais d’autres ambitions, comme chanter et jouer dans des films. Et la deuxième, c’est que je voulais prendre seule mes décisions et suivre mon propre chemin. Certains disaient que la seule chose que je savais faire, c'était danser à moitié nue pour plaire au public blanc. Et bien, j’allais leur prouver que je pouvais devenir une artiste complète. Ils allaient voir de quoi j’étais capable…

Ariana: For the next four years, Josephine chased her dream of becoming an internationally recognized artist, which began with mastering a new talent: singing. She trained with a vocal coach, and talked with every director she met about her ambitions.

Josephine: La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaa ! La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaa !

Vocal coach: N’oubliez pas de bien respirer, et de vous détendre.

Josephine: La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaa ! La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaa !

Vocal coach: C'est mieux, Josephine.

Josephine: La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaa ! La, la, la, la, la, la, laaaa !

Vocal coach: On y est, Josephine ! On y est !

Ariana: Finally, after years of hard work and juggling vocal training with her dance career, Josephine’s efforts paid off.

Josephine: Bonjour, Henri !

Ariana: One spring day in 1930, a man named Henri Varna paid Josephine a visit. He was the director of the popular music venue Le Casino de Paris.

Josephine: Est-ce que je peux vous offrir quelque chose à boire ?

Henri Varna: Joséphine, j’ai réfléchi à votre proposition. Je sais que vous voulez chanter. Vous avez un potentiel énorme, et je veux que tous les Français le voient. Alors je veux qu’on vous écrive la chanson de vos rêves. Une chanson qui vous fera briller ! Et je veux que vous la chantiez dans mon prochain spectacle.

Josephine: Henri, c’est une excellente nouvelle. J’accepte avec grand plaisir. Vous allez voir : vous ne serez pas déçu.

Ariana: In the new show, Josephine would act and perform several songs. For the finale, she would sing a stirring ballad about her two competing loves: her home country and Paris.

Josephine: La chanson s’appelait J’ai deux amours, et pour moi, elle était très spéciale. Cette chanson, c’était mon cri du cœur. Elle capturait exactement ce que je ressentais. Je suis née aux États-Unis, mais Paris m’avait donné la liberté d’être moi-même. J’aimais mon pays d’origine, mais la France m’avait accueillie comme l’une de ses enfants, et je lui devais tout.

Ariana: For weeks, Josephine rehearsed the number with Henri Varna… Every time she practiced, she felt the lyrics more deeply.

Josephine: Quand je suis arrivée à Paris, mon objectif principal était de réussir comme danseuse. Mais ici, j’ai aussi trouvé une liberté que je n’avais jamais connue aux États-Unis. Cette liberté a permis à l’artiste qui était en moi de s’exprimer pleinement, avec une joie sincère.

Ariana: But even with this new freedom, Josephine wondered: would her fans accept this new version of herself? Josephine the singer?

Josephine: Je ne voulais plus qu’on me voie juste comme la danseuse avec sa ceinture de bananes. J'étais convaincue que mes fans me suivraient partout mais je rêvais aussi d'un nouveau public : au-delà des clubs parisiens et des frontières françaises. J’étais une artiste et je voulais être respectée pour ça.

Ariana: September 26th, 1930 was opening night. Backstage, Josephine paced back and forth. Then the lights dimmed, and the red and gold velvet curtains parted.

Josephine: Pendant quelques secondes, j’ai ressenti de la peur traverser tout mon corps. Et puis, j’ai vu le public me regarder, et ça m’a donné du courage. Le moment que j’attendais était enfin arrivé.

Ariana: Josephine took a deep breath, opened her arms wide, and stepped onto the stage.

Josephine: Mesdames et Messieurs, et maintenant, je vais vous chanter une chanson très importante pour moi. Elle s’appelle : J’ai deux amours.

Ariana: A hush fell over the audience. They’d never seen her perform this way before. There were no props, no funny faces. It was just Josephine, and her voice rippled through the theater.

Josephine: Cette chanson, c’était ma vie. Chaque mot résonnait en moi. C’était comme si j’avais offert mon plus grand secret au public.

Quand j’ai entendu le public m’applaudir, ça m’a profondément touchée. Des larmes de joie ont coulé sur mes joues, sans que je puisse les arrêter. Après cette soirée, ma vie n’a plus jamais été la même.

Ariana: Soon, the song was playing from radios throughout the country. Her fame skyrocketed. Women copied her hairstyle. Little girls got Josephine dolls. She was an icon. She even had a pet cheetah, who she famously liked to take for walks on a leash, en laisse.

Josephine: Je l'ai appelé Chiquita. Qu’est-ce que je l’aimais ! Il est devenu mon animal de compagnie, et je l’emmenais partout avec moi. Souvent, j’allais me promener sur les Champs-Elysées. Je tenais Chiquita en laisse, et il portait un collier de diamants. Tout le monde nous admirait !

Ariana: In the years that followed, Josephine recorded several albums, performed across Europe, and became the first Black actress in history to star in a feature film. Then, she booked a tour in the U.S. She was sure that American audiences would now be ready to welcome her with open arms. But she was in for a nasty shock. White audiences in the 1930s were not ready to see a Black woman as the star of a show, and reviews were scathing. Heartbroken, Josephine returned to Paris.

Josephine: Je me suis rendue compte que si je rentrais aux États-Unis, je serais à nouveau une citoyenne de seconde classe. La France m’avait donné ma chance. Elle m’avait permis de devenir une artiste, et une star. J’avais travaillé trop dur pour ma liberté et mon succès. Je ne voulais pas les perdre. Je voulais que la France soit mon nouveau pays. Je voulais devenir Française.

Ariana: By now, Josephine, Chiquita and all her pets were enjoying life in a huge villa on the outskirts of Paris. And she’d become a star throughout Europe. But for one upcoming tour, she was scheduled to perform in Germany, where Nazism, or Nazisme, was on the rise. Its hate speech, ses discours de haine, created a hostile environment for artists like Josephine. Soon, friends like Henri Varna were voicing their concern.

Josephine: Un peu de café, Henri ?

Henri Varna: Avec plaisir ! Écoutez, Josephine, je n’aime pas ce qui se passe en Allemagne en ce moment. Un nouveau parti est en train de gagner de l’influence, et le Nazisme encourage la haine contre les Juifs, mais aussi contre les personnes noires. J’ai peur que vous soyez en danger, Josephine.

Josephine: Vous savez, Henri, ce ne sont pas ces discours de haine qui vont m’empêcher de chanter et de danser en Allemagne !

Ariana: Josephine had no intention of canceling her tour. And so, she left for Germany, despite the warnings from her friends.

Josephine: En Europe, je me sentais appréciée, en sécurité, et surtout, je me sentais libre. J’avais entendu parler de ce nouveau parti fasciste en Allemagne, mais je ne comprenais pas vraiment ce qu’il se passait. Je me disais : « Ce n’est pas ça qui va m’arrêter ! ». Je ne me doutais pas encore que ce qui se passait était si grave, et que bientôt, ma liberté et celle de millions d’autres personnes allaient être en danger.
