Episode 68: La caza (The Hunt)

The police have finally put together how the robbers vanished with the loot. Yet despite several leads, agents are struggling to arrest any suspects. While the police try to keep their investigation secret, the reporters will learn that the thieves left behind a mysterious clue.

Martina: In the basement of the Rio Bank, north of Buenos Aires, Officer M. couldn't believe his eyes. Just as he and the special forces team had discovered a large hole behind one of the bank's filing cabinets.

Officer M.: "¡Un momento! ¡Todavía no podemos entrar!".

Martina: His flashlight landed on what looked to be a grenade, just inside the hole.

Officer M.: Llamamos a la unidad de explosivos de inmediato. Hicieron pruebas y determinaron que la granada era falsa. Armas falsas y una granada falsa. No lo podíamos creer, todo fue una pérdida de tiempo. Pensábamos en lo que podían estar haciendo los ladrones a esa hora, cerca de las once de la noche.

Martina: The grenade was fake…a decoy. Yet another distraction that had bought the thieves more time. Police had a hunch that the hole in the wall led to the sewer, or alcantarilla, down below the bank. So they sent in divers to investigate.

Officer M.: Otros agentes y yo caminamos dentro de la alcantarilla hasta que encontramos un bote inflable con motor. Eso nos dio una idea de cómo los ladrones se habían escapado. Esa era la primera pieza del rompecabezas.

And now, Episode 2: The Hunt, or La caza.

Martina: While Officer M. and his team searched for clues in the sewers below the bank, Journalists Rodolfo Palacios and María Ripetta were busy reporting on the story up above them, on the streets of Acassuso.

Rodolfo: Esta era la información que teníamos: los ladrones habían abierto 145 cajas de seguridad y se habían llevado aproximadamente 20 millones de dólares en dinero y joyas. Por suerte, yo no estaba solo. María y yo trabajábamos muy bien juntos. Ella tenía fuentes en la policía y yo conocía mejor el mundo de los ladrones y la delincuencia.

Martina: Now that this was the biggest story in the country, María and Rodolfo were under heavy pressure from their editors to bring them stories about the robbery with new angles and exclusive interviews. The media were in a frenzy, competing for the biggest scoop, or primicia.

Rodolfo: Nuestro editor quería tener primicias. Él quería una historia diferente a las de los otros diarios. Nosotros teníamos que trabajar más que los demás para obtener información exclusiva. Desafortunadamente, esto era muy difícil porque los investigadores no tenían mucha información.

Martina: As more details got out in the news, Argentines across the country became fascinated with the story of the Río bank heist. Everyone was glued to their TVs, hungry for more information.

Rodolfo: Ese sábado por la mañana estaba lloviendo. Ya no había tanta gente en el lugar, pero sí muchos policías y periodistas. El banco estaba cerrado y el perímetro delimitado.

Martina: The customers of the bank, mostly upper-middle-class residents of Buenos Aires, were still trying to figure out if they had lost their life savings. The people Rodolfo and María interviewed were emotional and distraught.

Rodolfo: Entrevistamos a algunos de ellos y estaban muy preocupados. Para muchos, los contenidos de esas cajas eran los ahorros de toda su vida. El banco se tenía que hacer responsable de cada peso y esas personas no iban a descansar hasta obtenerlo.

Martina: It was a Friday, a full week after the robbery had taken place, and Rodolfo and María were on a tight deadline to submit stories by the time their newspaper ran on Sunday. They were desperate to find a new angle on the crime — something other news outlets weren't reporting. And then, just their luck, their sources in the police force went completely silent.

María: Los ladrones se escaparon en sus propias narices y, además, se llevaron un botín millonario. Decir que estaban de muy mal humor era poco, así que no querían darnos ningún tipo de información.

Martina: The truth was that the police had no new leads, not the night before and not that morning either. María and Rodolfo began to walk the area. They couldn't go back to their editor empty-handed.

María: Rodolfo y yo teníamos que llevarle algo a nuestro jefe, así que decidimos explorar el territorio para obtener más información.

Martina: Acassuso is home to some of Buenos Aires's wealthiest residents — including prominent politicians. All of this only increased pressure on police to solve the case. Here's Rodolfo Palacios.

Rodolfo: El ministro de seguridad de Argentina vivía en Acassuso y él también seguía el caso muy de cerca. Esto le ponía más presión a la situación.

Martina: Some neighbors told María and Rodolfo that they were terrified. This type of robbery was not common in such a low crime area.

Rodolfo: Yo fui a tocar las puertas de cada casa preguntando si alguien había visto algo, pero nadie sabía nada. Todos tenían miedo y estaban molestos. No éramos los únicos tocando puertas, la policía estaba haciendo lo mismo.

Martina: As Rodolfo and María walked the streets of Acassuso, underground, the police were examining every inch of the storm drains, desperate for clues. Here's Officer M.:

Officer M.: Después de encontrar el bote inflable con motor, descubrimos que habían construido un dique para facilitar el movimiento del bote dentro de la alcantarilla. Era toda una obra de ingeniería.

Martina: A tunnel. An inflatable boat. A dam, or dique, in the drain. Everything pointed to an escape via the river. Or so thought Officer M.

Officer M.: Todos pensamos que se habían escapado por la alcantarilla hasta llegar al río.

Martina: The police leaked this information to the media to give the illusion that they had credible leads. When María Ripetta heard about the storm drain theory, she and a photographer visited the river to check the drain pipe where the thieves had supposedly escaped.

María: Tomamos fotos de la salida del tubo que llegaba al río. Otra teoría era que los ladrones se habían escapado en jet skis. Nosotros exploramos todas las hipótesis.

Martina: But the drain pipe theory was immediately discarded when Officer M. discovered a ladder. It was on an elevated side channel that led to a utility hole cover in another part of the neighborhood, far from the river.

Officer M.: La escalera salía por una entrada de la alcantarilla que daba a la calle. Nosotros comenzamos a interrogar a los vecinos de la zona, cerca de esa entrada.

Martina: The police and prosecutor Apolo then began combing the area, talking to dozens of residents. If the thieves had escaped through that utility hole, they reasoned… someone must have seen them. Again, Officer M.:

Officer M.: Dentro del túnel encontramos herramientas, algunas joyas y metales. Confirmamos que la hipótesis del río no era posible, pero todavía no sabíamos por dónde habían salido.

Martina: Finally an eyewitness told the police about the mysterious crew that had been working around that same hole a few days before. The witness, a domestic worker, worked in a house 50 meters away from the utility hole.

Officer M.: Una mujer nos dijo que todas las mañanas, cuando sacaba a pasear al perro, veía a un grupo de personas trabajando ahí hasta el mediodía. Ellos le dijeron que eran empleados de la empresa de aguas. Ella había hablado con un muchacho joven, según ella, muy lindo. Con la información que nos dio esa mujer, imaginamos que los ladrones se habían escapado por ahí.

Martina: The fake weapons, the confusing hostage releases, even the pizza order the thieves had placed shortly before disappearing: it was becoming clear these things had all been planned specifically to lead police astray. The police were now being ridiculed by the press for letting the thieves get away, so Officer M. was careful to keep some details of the investigation as quiet as possible.

Officer M.: Teníamos que ser muy prudentes con los periodistas porque sabíamos que el caso era de gran interés público. Parecía que la gente disfrutaba saber que los ladrones se habían escapado y que nosotros no teníamos ni idea de cómo lo habían hecho. Lo peor era que los medios de comunicación explotaban esa situación.

Martina: With their contacts inside the police staying quiet, María and Rodolfo returned to their newsroom empty-handed. They were disappointed.

Rodolfo: Estábamos frustrados. Yo trataba de imaginar qué tipo de ladrón o grupo de ladrones había diseñado un robo de esta magnitud. Nuestros editores entendieron la situación porque sabían que María y yo estábamos haciendo todo lo posible para obtener información. Los dos seguimos trabajando día y noche, hablando con nuestras fuentes, insistiendo e intentando descubrir algo.

Martina: But for days, there were no breaks in the case for anyone. María and Rodolfo took some time to prepare for their next Sunday deadline, doing research, and interviewing witnesses. But they didn't turn up anything new. And they knew that the police were equally clueless.

Rodolfo: La policía estaba desesperada porque no entendía nada. Nosotros también empezábamos a sentir la presión de nuestros editores que nos pedían información exclusiva.

Martina: All the usual suspects who could’ve been behind a job like this were already in jail. The thieves Rodolfo knew preferred violence, big weapons — even shootings, or disparos. But this was a completely different style, it seemed…a clean job.

Rodolfo: Este robo tenía una característica muy particular: no había sido un evento violento. Los rehenes estaban perfectamente bien. No hubo ni un solo disparo. Estos ladrones eran diferentes de los otros.

Martina: The thieves were unknown to Officer M. as well. For him, the search had become a true obsession.

Officer M.: Yo coordinaba un equipo de treinta y seis personas muy preparadas y nuestro objetivo era uno solo: encontrar a los ladrones a toda costa. Empezábamos a trabajar a las ocho de la mañana y no parábamos hasta las tres de la mañana, ni siquiera para comer.

Martina: María Ripetta wasn't ready to give up on the police as a source of new information. She had always had reliable sources on the force. So during those early days, she would take some agents out for lunch, hoping they'd give her tips about the case that would give her an edge over other news outlets.

María: Los medios de comunicación, televisión, diarios y programas de noticias seguían este caso muy de cerca. Todos los periodistas querían lo mismo, información nueva, pero eso era cada vez más difícil.

Martina: Then, on a Friday night two weeks after the robbery, María telephoned once again one of her sources in the police. She was in desperate need of a scoop and had only one day to turn in her article for print on Sunday.

María: Hablé con mi fuente durante varios minutos, pero él no me decía nada nuevo. Yo le explicaba que necesitaba algo más, algo diferente. Y él, cansado de tanta insistencia, finalmente me confesó algo que la policía había mantenido en secreto: los ladrones habían dejado una nota en una pared cerca de las cajas de seguridad.

Martina: The agent told María that the police had found a note written in black letters and taped to a wall. The agent told her: "Write down what I'm going to say because I'm not going to repeat it."

María: El policía me dijo que la nota decía: "En barrio de ricachones, sin armas ni rencores, es solo plata y no amores".

Martina: The thieves had written a short note that literally translates to: "In a neighborhood of rich people, without weapons or grudges, there's just money, no love." The officer's disclosure was a major scoop for María. It offered the biggest hint so far into the motive behind the heist.

María: Era un mensaje intrigante. Yo tenía una teoría: explicaba que no hubo violencia durante el robo porque ese era el deseo de los ladrones. Indicaba que el impacto en ese barrio de "ricos" no iba a ser grave porque solo se habían llevado el dinero de gente que ya tenía suficiente. Era como un robo estilo Robin Hood. ¡Ahora sí, yo tenía la verdadera primicia!

Martina: María Ripetta rushed to the newsroom with her new scoop about the handwritten note. To her, the message took on extra meaning because of the economic crisis that had struck Argentina a few years before, what they called el Corralito. During the crisis, the country's banks froze everyone's assets, to ensure that Argentines, and more importantly, their money, stayed inside the country during the worst of the crisis. Many people were still scarred from that period, when they couldn't even access their own savings. Some people lost everything.

María: El Corralito afectó a las clases altas y medias que perdieron sus ahorros con la devaluación y la congelación de cuentas. En ese banco, muchas personas de clase media y media alta guardaban sus joyas y dinero en cajas de seguridad, donde teóricamente estaban a salvo. Los ladrones prácticamente se estaban riendo de los ricos.

Martina: María's colleague, Rodolfo, was shocked that the police had actually revealed the existence of this note.

Rodolfo: ¡Ni nosotros ni nuestro editor lo podíamos creer! La policía nos dio esa información y eso los dejaba en una peor posición que la de antes. Era como un chiste: los ladrones robaron el banco y les hicieron creer a todos que iba a ser una masacre. Luego, cuando la policía entró, ellos ya no estaban y, encima de todo, ¡habían dejado un poema!

Martina: Rodolfo did some research and found some startling similarities with another robbery, back in 1976, in the French city of Nice. Those robbers had also broken into safe deposit boxes, and left a message written on the wall that said: "Without weapons, hatred or violence."

María: Seguramente esa fue la fuente de inspiración de los ladrones. Para mí, este era el primer robo en la vida real que parecía sacado de una película de acción. Descubrir quién estaba detrás de todo esto era mi nueva obsesión, y la de Rodolfo también.

Martina: María and Rodolfo worked the note into their story in time to make the Sunday paper. Their headline was: "Secret message left by the gang," (El mensaje secreto que dejó la banda). It was a huge development because it pointed towards a more significant motive than just robbing a bank. The reporters thought that the thieves were making a statement against greed and wealth.

María: Fue mi primera gran primicia y me dio mucha satisfacción. Además, era importante porque no había nueva información sobre el robo por ninguna parte.

Martina: Once news of the note came out, the police were unable to deny the story. Again, Officer M.:

Officer M.: Fue un robo inteligente, muy bien planificado y ejecutado. A mí me dolía mucho pensar que algunos medios de comunicación y la gente consideraban a estos delincuentes como héroes. Como si fueran Robin Hood.

Martina: Given the fallout from the infamous Corralito, it wasn't surprising that people were beginning to glorify the thieves as heroes. In the heat of the crisis, masses of furious and bankrupt protesters took to the streets of Buenos Aires in a revolt against the government that left at least 22 dead and scores of protesters injured in cities around the nation. This was all fresh in people's minds, so many people were still angry with the banks. But Officer M. didn't think their support of the robbers was fair.

Officer M.: Era injusto celebrar el robo al Banco Río porque las víctimas lo habían perdido todo. Había muchas cosas muy valiosas en las cajas de seguridad robadas: herencias, joyas que habían pasado de generación en generación, incluso un botón de la dinastía Ming. Son cosas que, además del valor económico, tenían un valor sentimental.

Martina: But the media wasn't too interested in covering stories of the victims, so they continued to feed the folk hero narrative.

María: El robo se convirtió en la telenovela del verano. La gente estaba en la playa y leía sobre el caso. Yo escuchaba cómo se hablaba del robo en los bares. Todo el mundo quería resolver el misterio. Rodolfo y yo estábamos muy emocionados con la investigación. Éramos el centro de atención cada vez que veíamos a nuestros colegas.

Martina: During the second week of the investigation, the police got what looked like a lead in the case. It had to do with that strange phone call the robbers made to the TV channel during the heist — when they requested an interview from inside the bank. Here's Officer M.:

Officer M.: Cuando ellos llamaron al canal de televisión, dejaron un número de teléfono. Pensábamos que eso había sido un gran error de su parte.

Martina: The police traced the cell towers in the area to determine where the call had been made.

Officer M.: Trabajábamos con el mejor experto de teléfonos celulares en toda Argentina. Él cruzaba datos de las antenas de todas las compañías y podía hacer mapas con el uso de los celulares. Analizamos mucha información y seguimos la pista de varios sospechosos, pero no pudimos encontrarlos.

Martina: With so many loose ends and no reliable leads, the prosecution decided to set up a hotline for tips. Dozens of people called in claiming to know who the thieves were. Predictably…most of those leads, or pistas, would end up being fake. Here's Prosecutor Apolo, we reached him by phone:

Prosecutor Apolo: Fue una investigación muy minuciosa y un trabajo muy intenso. No descartábamos ninguna hipótesis porque este fue un hecho que tomó estado público. Tuvimos hipótesis falsas todos los días, pero no descartábamos absolutamente nada.

Martina: They didn't rule out absolutely anything. One morning, the phone rang at the San Isidro district attorney's office insistently. An agitated woman said she wanted to speak to the prosecutor, urgently.

Prosecutor Apolo: Una testigo de identidad reservada había intentado comunicarse conmigo desde las 7:30 a.m. Yo no descartaba ninguna hipótesis, entonces le pedí al personal de investigaciones que la trajeran a mi oficina. Era una mujer.

Martina: When the woman finally came in the see Prosecutor Apolo, she dropped the biggest clue about the participants, or partícipes, in the robbery.

Prosecutor Apolo: Me dijo que conocía a los partícipes del robo al banco y que uno de ellos era su esposo.

Martina: To recap — the police have finally put together that the robbers vanished with the loot through an underground tunnel. And the reporters have learned that the thieves left a mysterious note that talked about robbing the rich without violence. Yet despite these new leads, the prosecution has no new suspects… Until a surprise witness comes forward to tell Prosecutor Apolo that she has vital information on this spectacular heist…
