Eréndira Sánchez is a young skydiving apprentice in Mexico when a world-famous skydiver offers her a chance to train at his facility in the U.S. But after a tragic accident, Eréndira is forced to choose between a life of freedom in the sky or one of safety on the ground.

Martina: In Mexico when you turn 15, it's common for your family to throw you a big party called a "quinceañera." It's a huge milestone to celebrate the end of your childhood. What's not common, is what happened to Eréndira Sánchez at her own quinceañera, 20 years ago.

Eréndira: Mi fiesta fue en el campo de entrenamiento de paracaidismo donde mi papá trabajaba.

Martina: Campo de entrenamiento de paracaidismo is a skydiving training camp.

Eréndira: De pronto, mi papá me preguntó si estaba lista, y yo le dije que sí. Entonces, él comenzó a ponerme el paracaídas encima de mi vestido de fiesta blanco. ¡Yo estaba muy nerviosa!

Martina: Soon Eréndira found herself wearing a paracaídas, or parachute, over her white princess dress, with a crowd of people clapping around her. It was a surreal experience to be there on that sunny afternoon in Morelos, a state south of Mexico City, where they lived.

Eréndira: Mis recuerdos son como flashes. El avión se elevó y llegó a 10,000 pies. Entonces, mi papá y yo saltamos en tándem, compartiendo el mismo paracaídas.

Martina: There's a video of this—you can see Eréndira smiling and moving her arms wildly like a bird, the wind shaking her dress as if it were made of feathers. There are mountains and volcanoes in the distance as you see her falling towards Earth. She remembers that day as a great revelation.

Eréndira: Es mágico abrir los brazos y sentir la velocidad mientras caes. Sin embargo, lo más emocionante fue cuando mi papá me dejó abrir el paracaídas. Martina: When Eréndira and her dad landed, everyone came running toward her applauding as she got on her feet. She was smiling and full of happiness.

Martina: Eréndira's father, Ramiro, was a big influence on his daughter's passion. When she was a child, he got a job at a skydiving training camp.

Eréndira: Mi papá empezó a saltar cuando tenía treinta y cinco años y a mí me gustaba mucho verlo. Primero, él estaba a mi lado y, poco tiempo después, estaba allá arriba en el cielo.

Martina: Ramiro was very passionate about skydiving. Eréndira used to admire that and was very curious about what he felt when he was in the air. When she ended up jumping at her quinceañera, she felt something new.

Eréndira: Muchas personas se sienten libres. Yo siento felicidad. Cuando saltas de un avión, sientes que estás lejos de todas las preocupaciones. De pronto, las cosas que parecen importantes en la Tierra se ven muy pequeñas e insignificantes desde el aire.

Martina: After her quinceañera, Eréndira was certain, she wanted to be a skydiver. So she started bugging her father to teach her.

Eréndira: Al principio, él no me prestaba atención. Era algo normal… Un día, los niños quieren ser una cosa y, al otro día, cambian de opinión. Sin embargo, yo creo que era también porque nuestra familia era pobre. No teníamos dinero para pagar los gastos de este deporte.

Martina: Time passed and Eréndira didn't change her mind. She was way more interested in falling from the sky than walking on earth.

Eréndira: Mi papá me dijo que si quería aprender esta profesión, primero, tenía que aprender a doblar los paracaídas. Él pensó que eso me iba a dar miedo, pero yo aprendí a hacerlo en un fin de semana. Después de eso, él ya no tenía más excusas. Martina: Skydiving is challenging for many reasons. It's a male-dominated sport, and though it's changing, some women still face obstacles when training.

Eréndira: En aquel tiempo, yo no sentía mucho la discriminación porque mi papá trabajaba en el campo de entrenamiento, pero mi caso es único. Los colegas hombres muchas veces dicen que las mujeres no servimos para este deporte porque somos pequeñas o porque no tenemos mucha fuerza.

Martina: Skydiving is also very expensive. To climb the professional ladder, you have to accumulate jumps. The more you jump, the better your career is. Eréndira had to work hard to pay for her training.

Eréndira: Saltar es una inversión. Para ser instructor, dar clases y empezar a vivir de este deporte, necesitas quinientos saltos como mínimo. Y cada salto cuesta unos ciento ochenta dólares.

Martina: The process can be very slow if you don't have the resources. In 2003, when Eréndira was 20 years old, she only had 200 jumps on her record. She was very far away from what she needed to become an instructor. In fact, she felt confused about her future in skydiving.

Eréndira: Para mí, vivir del paracaidismo era algo inimaginable. Mi trabajo era doblar y guardar los paracaídas y, cuando lograba ahorrar dinero para pagar un vuelo, entonces saltaba.

Martina: Eréndira was feeling the emotional and financial burden of her passion, and she was realizing that she couldn't move any faster. It was around that time that she met a person who would make a huge difference in her life. His name was Roger Nelson.

Eréndira: Roger Nelson era un paracaidista muy famoso de los Estados Unidos.

Martina: Roger Nelson was a skydiving legend with a colorful past, a record-setting parachuter. Roger was also an author, an entrepreneur, and an Olympic athlete who had once spent time in prison for charges related to tax evasion.

Eréndira: ¡Roger era como un mito viviente!

Martina: His skydiving facility in Chicago was world famous. But to Eréndira, and to many other members of Mexico's skydiving community, Roger Nelson was first and foremost the man who perfected the freefly.

Eréndira: Roger tenía un estilo de salto que estaba muy de moda, el freefly. Todos queríamos aprender a saltar como él.

Martina: Until the 80's, parachuters used to adopt the traditional "belly-to-earth orientation" when falling. Freeflying is adopting any orientation you can imagine that's not the traditional one: your head pointing to the earth, for example. Nelson was one of the pioneers of that style and made it very famous.

Eréndira: Y bueno… Un día, él fue al campo de entrenamiento donde yo trabajaba. Fue algo… ¡increíble!

Martina: For a young skydiving apprentice like Eréndira, Roger Nelson was what Lady Gaga could be for a young singer: not only an idol, but someone to learn from. Eréndira told him that she wanted to jump with him. It was a challenge, or reto, for her.

Eréndira: Era un reto personal. Yo quería saber si realmente podía hacer ese tipo de salto.

Martina: Roger accepted, and he jumped a few times with Eréndira. Over the next few days, they got to know each other better. Eréndira remembers Roger telling her how proud he was of his training site in Chicago.

Eréndira: Me decía que tenía caballos y muchos aviones, y que el lugar donde estaba era muy bonito.

Martina: After observing Eréndira's technique, Roger made a surprising announcement: he would offer Eréndira a scholarship so she could train at his facility in Chicago.

Eréndira: Me dijo: "He visto cómo saltas y creo que aprendes rápido".

Martina: It felt unreal. She was excited, but also uncertain about whether she should go. So she decided to talk to her father about it.

Eréndira: Me sentí en una de esas películas donde una persona rica llega a tu vida y hace tus sueños realidad. Pero, en este caso, la propuesta era real y perfecta para mí. Cuando le dije a mi papá, él se sorprendió. Él sabía que era importante para mí, así que decidió acompañarme a Chicago.

Martina: A few weeks later, Eréndira and her father arrived in Chicago. It was the summer of 2003, and Nelson hadn't lied about how beautiful the training facility was. Its name was Skydive Chicago and it was like a dream.

Martina: Pista de despegue y aterrizaje means landing and takeoff runway. Roger took them to a fully equipped trailer house and showed them all the accommodations. Eréndira noticed he was a very busy man who spent more time managing the business than jumping with the students.

Martina: Similar to Mexico, Eréndira didn't see many women there. But Roger had a daughter, and she was already a skydiving champion. Eréndira found her presence at the camp encouraging.

Eréndira: Yo no perdía el tiempo y saltaba todos los días. Yo era como una niña con juguetes nuevos. Entonces, mi número de saltos comenzó a crecer.

Martina: In Mexico, Eréndira's jumps were limited by money to one a day. In Chicago she could jump as much as she wanted, sometimes 20 times a day. Roger was generous and tried to make Eréndira and her father feel at home.

Eréndira: Un día, Roger se enteró de que era mi cumpleaños. En ese entonces, había un equipo militar de élite llamado the Golden Knights entrenando en el campo. Él fue con ellos al supermercado para comprar carnes y bebidas.

Martina: To see a busy legend like Roger and the US Army parachuters going to buy meat and drinks for her birthday, made Eréndira feel very special.

Martina: Roger also had a few chats with Ramiro, Eréndira's dad.

Martina: Eréndira now remembers that conversation and thinks of it as a sad coincidence. Not long after, Eréndira was having lunch at the cafeteria one afternoon, and suddenly things got crazy.

Eréndira: La gente empezó a entrar y salir de la cafetería gritando. Todos estaban muy nerviosos. Mi inglés no era bueno, así que no entendía qué estaba pasando. Cuando salimos, un compañero que hablaba español me dijo: "Es Roger".

Martina: Eréndira doesn't remember the details too well. Now she thinks that she maybe unconsciously decided to forget. She does remember there was an ambulance at the scene and people in shock all around. Roger had had an accident.

Eréndira: Roger había saltado con un grupo grande. Ya estaban por tocar tierra, cuando alguien hizo un movimiento imprudente y golpeó el paracaídas de Roger. El paracaídas se cerró y él no pudo volver a abrirlo.

Martina: Eréndira was in shock and confused. She had just gotten there a few weeks before and suddenly her mentor was not there anymore.

Eréndira: Fue demasiado para mí. No sabía qué hacer o cómo actuar. El funeral fue unos días después. Mucha gente asistió. No sé cuántos días pasaron, pero yo dejé de saltar. Yo no entendía cómo alguien podía morir haciendo lo que más le gustaba.

Martina: Ramiro, Eréndira's father, stayed very close to her that week, looking after her.

Eréndira: Mi papá habló conmigo porque seguramente vio que yo estaba muy triste. Un día, me dijo que si quería dejar el deporte, él iba a ayudarme. En ese momento, yo sentí tanto amor por mi papá.

Martina: The accident was in the news, but Eréndira didn't pay much attention to the media those days. She spent as much time as she could with her father. She was so grateful that he was there.

Eréndira: Yo de verdad creo que el gran mentor en mi vida siempre ha sido mi padre. No quiero compararlo con Roger, porque Roger tuvo otro papel en mi historia. Él vio mi potencial y me ayudó, pero mi padre siempre ha estado ahí para mí emocionalmente.

Martina: A few days later, when things were more calm, Roger's son and daughter approached Eréndira.

Martina: Roger's daughter and son were aware of their father's appreciation for Eréndira, and told her that she could stay and keep practicing if she wanted to. Eréndira thinks Roger would have wanted her to keep training.

Martina: So Eréndira spent three months in Chicago. Being there felt like being in an incubator. In just that time, she completed 500 jumps, more than she had accomplished in the past six years. She also learned to perform night jumps, a requirement for earning her instructor's license.

Martina: By then, Eréndira had gotten a lot of experience. Before she knew it, it was time to return home.

Eréndira: Cuando el invierno llegó, mi padre y yo regresamos a México. Nosotros habíamos pasado solo tres meses afuera, pero yo aprendí muchísimo sobre el paracaidismo y sus técnicas. Poco después, recibí mi licencia de instructora y empecé a enseñar este deporte.

Martina: Eréndira already loved skydiving but teaching this sport to other people, opened a new door in her life. She felt it the first time she jumped with a student.

Eréndira: Recuerdo que disfruté mucho la primera vez que salté y compartí mi pasión con otra persona. En ese primer salto como instructora, decidí que yo no solo quería ser paracaidista. Mi deseo era enseñarles a otras personas a saltar, a tomar confianza y a sorprenderse con este deporte.

Martina: Eréndira's desire to teach skydiving gave her a whole new perspective on the sport. It had always been an individual experience, but in teaching it, she has the chance to share her love of the sport with others. Eréndira worked hard to become a leader in her field. Before long, she became the first female instructor in all of Mexico.

Eréndira: Yo vengo de una familia sencilla y con pocos recursos, pero mi experiencia ha sido muy privilegiada. Como mujer, he tenido mucha suerte porque mis dos grandes instructores, Roger y mi padre, no eran machistas y no tuvieron problemas para enseñarme este deporte.

Martina: Years have passed since then, and now Eréndira works at a training camp in Texas. She's actually an examiner, which means she's an instructor of instructors. Regarding women's presence in the sport, the numbers show there's still a lot of work to do.

Eréndira: Yo creo que solo hay unas ciento cincuenta mujeres instructoras en todo el mundo. ¡Eso es muy poco!

Martina: Eréndira now has 13,400 jumps on her record and has attained one of the highest levels of expertise in skydiving.

Eréndira: Mi sueño es ser para otras chicas lo mismo que mi padre y Roger fueron para mí: una inspiración. Un día, el cielo estará lleno de mujeres paracaidistas.

Martina: Eréndira Sánchez is a skydiver from Mexico, and currently lives in Houston, Texas. She's the first Latina female skydiving instructor in the United States.
