Episode 33: L’amour et les chevaux sauvages (Love and Wild Horses)

At 30, Aliénor Le Gouvello set off to ride solo across Australia’s toughest trails. She gave herself one year to train wild horses and complete the journey. Riding ten hours a day, every day, Aliénor was determined not to quit — not for crocodiles, fire ants…not even for the handsome helicopter pilot she met along the way.

Ngofeen: In 2005, at age 20, Aliénor Le Gouvello longed for adventure. So when an old boyfriend invited her to visit him in Melbourne, she couldn’t refuse. She bought a flight and set off for a romantic escapade in Australia, leaving France behind.

Aliénor: À l'aéroport de Melbourne, j’ai regardé partout, mais mon ami n’était pas là. J’étais très déçue parce que j’avais traversé la planète pour ce garçon, et il m’avait posé un lapin.

Ngofeen: Her boyfriend had stood her up, or as the French say, il lui avait posé un lapin. But Aliénor decided to give the land down under a chance. And…she fell in love again…with Australia, its friendly people and the wild beauty of the Australian bush.

Aliénor: J’ai découvert la nature au sens pur, ce qu’on appelle le bush en Australie. C’est un espace géant, très sauvage. Je me suis sentie à ma place avec les animaux et la nature.

Ngofeen: Aliénor loved the wilderness. She was an accomplished horseback rider and she wanted to lead the life of an adventurer. To her, Australia was the ideal place to make a life, go horseback riding in new landscapes, and test what she was made of.

Ngofeen: Once she decided to stay in Australia, Aliénor got an opportunity to work and live with an Aboriginal community in the country’s central desert. She’d help community elders run activities for local kids — including hikes, des randonnées. It was an adventurer’s dream come true.

Aliénor: Une fois par semaine, on partait en randonnée avec les enfants dans le bush. Je suis tombée amoureuse des panoramas immenses, des montagnes, des rivières de sable blanc, de cette terre rouge ! C’était magnifique.

Ngofeen: On a hot, parched day, Aliénor received two unlikely visitors. She had placed water outside for her dogs, but when she looked out, she caught a glimpse of a wild stallion, un étalon, and a mare, une jument. They were coming for a drink of water.

Aliénor: Un jour, j’ai vu un magnifique étalon noir et une jument blanche en train de boire près de chez nous. Ils avaient l’air en très bonne santé, et ils étaient superbes.

Ngofeen: This was the first time Aliénor had seen Australia’s famous wild horses. Australians call them “brumbies.” They’re the descendants of once-domesticated horses who escaped to the wild, and now roam the bush freely. Aliénor marvelled at the brumbies’ ability to thrive in the desert-like conditions, with little access to food and water.

Aliénor: Les brumbies s’adaptent très facilement à leur environnement. C’était fascinant de les voir tout près de moi. En Europe, on n’a pas l'habitude de voir des chevaux sauvages, en liberté.

Ngofeen: Aliénor cherished these moments in the wild. But after ten years, she found herself ready for a new adventure. So when a friend told her about Australia’s Bicentennial National Horse Trail, she was intrigued. It’s a 3,300 mile trek through the most rugged terrains of Australia — about 5,300 kilometers.

Aliénor: Pour moi, la vie est une grande aventure, et ce trek représentait une aventure magnifique. Alors j’ai fait beaucoup de recherches sur le sujet.

Ngofeen: Aliénor found out the trail passed through 18 national parks and 53 state forests, and that only 36 people had completed the journey. Aliénor decided to be the 37th. This expedition would be a chance to reconnect with her childhood love of horseback riding in a yearlong adventure… But first she had to figure out how to finance it.

Aliénor: Je n’avais pas d’argent pour financer mon expédition, alors je suis repartie dans le bush. Pendant un an, j’ai travaillé et j’ai économisé de l’argent. Je préparais la logistique de mon aventure, et en même temps, je m’informais beaucoup sur les treks et sur les chevaux en Australie.

Ngofeen: As she prepared for her adventure, Aliénor read a news article about brumbies. She found out that the government saw them as pests, harmful to the environment. In 2000, in New South Wales, they had ordered the elimination of herds of brumbies. They’d used helicopters to hunt and shoot them.

Aliénor: J’ai trouvé ça absolument horrible. C’est une situation complexe. Le gouvernement considère les brumbies comme dangereux pour l’environnement, à cause de leur grand nombre. Mais je voulais dénoncer le traitement injuste et cruel de ces chevaux sauvages. Alors j’ai décidé de faire mon trek avec des brumbies. Je voulais montrer à tout le monde la puissance et les qualités de ces chevaux.

Ngofeen: Aliénor decided to document her journey on Facebook, under the name “Wild at Heart.” She thought that if she managed to complete the trail with brumbies, it would draw attention to their plight. So she got in touch with an organization that oversees brumbies in Australia’s Guy Fawkes River National Park.

Aliénor: L’association Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse essaye de trouver des méthodes humaines pour s’occuper des brumbies et éviter de les tuer de façon cruelle.

Ngofeen: The Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse organization rescues brumbies that would otherwise be killed. Aliénor contacted them to purchase a few horses for her trek, and they offered her a place to train and get ready.

Aliénor: J’ai choisi Roxanne, une jument très belle qui avait beaucoup d’endurance et de détermination. J’ai aussi choisi deux jeunes mâles et je les ai appelés Cooper et River.

Ngofeen: Aliénor planned to rotate between the three horses: Roxanne, Cooper and River. Each day she’d ride on one horse, and one horse would carry the pack saddle and one would rest. She hoped to complete the full trek in less than a year.

Aliénor: On devait faire une rotation tous les jours pour que les chevaux ne se blessent pas. Pour moi, la relation avec mes chevaux était très importante. J’avais envie de bien m’occuper d’eux et de ne pas les stresser. La seule façon de survivre en faisant un trek comme celui-ci, c’est d’avoir des chevaux en bonne santé.

Ngofeen: In November of 2015, Aliénor started her journey. For the next 365 days, she would be mostly alone on the road. She had never embarked on such a long and difficult expedition…on her own, with no backup and no support.

Aliénor: À ce moment-là, le trek, c’était un vrai challenge pour moi. J’allais marcher entre quatre et dix heures par jour. Je m’étais préparée pendant un an et demi pour ce moment. Mais même avec autant de préparation, on ne sait jamais quelles difficultés on peut rencontrer sur la route.

Ngofeen: Training the horses had taken longer than she expected. In order to avoid ending her trek in the northern mountains of Victoria, during snowstorms in August, Aliénor decided to begin in the south of the country.

Aliénor: J’ai décidé de commencer par le sud, pour des raisons climatiques. Je ne voulais pas être dans les montagnes quand le grand froid allait arriver. Avec le froid, tout est plus difficile. Et c’était déjà un énorme challenge pour moi et mes chevaux.

Ngofeen: Aliénor rode south to north, starting with the hardest section of the trail: rough terrains and narrow trails. Her two youngest horses, River and Cooper, weren’t used to trekking eight to ten hours a day over steep mountains, des monts. They rebelled. So, Aliénor had to spend most of those days on foot, à pied, in order to drag the horses uphill.

Aliénor: À chaque mont, River et Cooper ne voulaient pas avancer. Alors, pendant les montées et les descentes, j’étais à pied et je tirais mes deux chevaux. Cela prenait toute mon énergie.

Ngofeen: Aliénor began to wonder what she’d gotten herself into. Why had she chosen to put herself through this? She thought about quitting, every day, for two months. Until one day, she just couldn’t take it anymore.

Aliénor: Ce jour-là, je me suis dit : « Je ne peux plus avancer… » J’ai laissé tomber les rênes de mes chevaux, et je suis tombée par terre…

Ngofeen: As she collapsed on the ground, Aliénor felt terrible. But she was about to feel even worse. She had landed on a nest of jack jumper ants, a kind of ant whose bite leaves extremely painful burns. Aliénor screamed and shot back to her feet.

Aliénor: À ce moment-là, je pense que la nature m’a envoyé un signal, pour me dire : « Allez, sois forte et lève-toi ! » J’ai regardé ma jument, Roxanne, j’ai mis une rêne autour de son cou, et je lui ai dit : « J’ai besoin de toi. »

Ngofeen: The mare, Roxanne, heard Aliénor and she took the lead. For the next two weeks, Roxanne set the pace for Aliénor, Cooper and River, and together they forged ahead.

Aliénor: Un mois plus tard, les deux autres chevaux ont enfin commencé à avancer, à comprendre qu’il fallait avancer en harmonie. Après trois mois, on est enfin devenus une équipe.

Ngofeen: After three months of travel, Aliénor and her horses entered a new section of trail, consisting of mountains and rainforests. They had to cross rugged and isolated terrains, but Aliénor could count on her horses to alert her to any danger.

Aliénor: Je pouvais compter sur River et Cooper pour me guider et m’aider. Roxanne, elle, c’était mon roc. Le matin, quand je prenais mon petit-déjeuner, Roxanne posait la tête sur mon épaule. Je reconnaissais mes trois chevaux au bruit qu’ils faisaient quand ils marchaient. Tous les quatre, nous avions une connexion exceptionnelle ! Je n’avais jamais vécu ça avant.

Ngofeen: Aliénor felt that with Roxanne, Cooper and River by her side, she could finish the trek. She was eight months in and only halfway through. At this rate, she’d run out of the money she’d saved to restock her supplies at stops along the way. But her solitary journey was about to swerve in a new direction.

Aliénor: Notre voyage prenait plus de temps que prévu. Mais je ne voulais pas arrêter. J’étais aux pieds du Queensland. Le Queensland est un état immense avec parfois des panoramas très monotones. C’est moins fatigant, mais plus ennuyeux. Alors mon plus grand challenge était mental. Je devais garder ma motivation.

Ngofeen: After eight months on the trail, Aliénor rode into the valleys and farmlands in the northern state of Queensland. The trail now passed through the driveway of a private property of cattle breeders. Aliénor caught a glimpse of a young man approaching on a tractor.

Aliénor: Ce jeune homme avait l’air sympa. Avec sa longue barbe et ses pieds nus, il était intrigant. J’ai une bonne intuition sur les gens parce que j’ai beaucoup voyagé, et j’ai senti que cet homme était inoffensif. Il m’a dit qu’il s’appelait Mitch, et quand il m’a proposé de m’apporter une bière froide à la fin de la journée, j’ai dit oui.

Ngofeen: Aliénor told Mitch where she was planning to camp and, that evening, he joined her for a drink at her campsite.

Aliénor: On a passé la soirée à parler. On a fait un feu, on a regardé les étoiles et on a discuté très tard. Mitch m’a parlé de ses voyages et de son travail comme pilote d’hélicoptère, et moi, je lui ai raconté mes aventures sur le trek.

Ngofeen: Mitch regaled her with tales about his life as a cattleman and his journeys piloting the ranch’s helicopter. Aliénor was charmed, but she remained focused on her mission: finishing her trek and raising awareness about the plight of the brumbies.

Aliénor: Moi, j’étais concentrée sur mon trek, mais j’avais envie de rester en contact avec Mitch. Alors, quand je suis partie, je lui ai dit quand serait mon prochain jour de repos.

Ngofeen: On Aliénor’s next rest day, son jour de repos, Mitch invited her to have a drink at a bush pub in a tiny farm community. Then, he drove back to his farm. And a few days later, he came back to find her at her next campsite.

Aliénor: On a continué à se voir, comme ça, mais Mitch faisait attention de ne pas me détourner de mon projet. Mitch m’a beaucoup encouragée, et il n’a pas essayé de s’imposer.

Ngofeen: During one of their evenings together, Aliénor told Mitch she missed the sea. A few weeks later, he asked her if she could find a meadow for her horses so he could pick her up…in a helicopter…and fly her to a deserted island for a romantic escapade.

Aliénor: Je voulais rester concentrée sur mon objectif. Mais je ne pouvais pas refuser. J'ai trouvé une prairie pour mes chevaux, et Mitch et moi, on est partis sur l'île déserte.

Ngofeen: On their way to the island, Aliénor and Mitch flew over wetlands… They spotted wild black swans, kangaroos, and wild boars. Tucked away on their deserted island, they walked along the sandy beaches and swam in the waves.

Aliénor: On a passé trois jours magiques. Et je commençais à avoir des sentiments pour Mitch, mais je ne lui ai rien dit. Le plus important, c’était mon expédition. À mon retour, j’étais heureuse de retrouver mes brumbies en pleine forme. Mitch et moi, on est restés en contact, et j’ai continué mon trek.

Ngofeen: Aliénor had covered 4,000 kilometers in 10 months. She had hiked over ridges and through forests. Now in Queensland, she was riding through cattle farmlands…with no end in sight. She was physically and mentally exhausted. And she knew cyclone season was about to hit the north of Australia.

Aliénor: Je ne pouvais plus me battre contre la nature. Les cyclones arrivaient, il faisait très chaud et je n’avais plus d’argent. Je devais faire une pause. Alors je suis retournée travailler dans la communauté aborigène.

Ngofeen: Aliénor resumed her job with the Aboriginal community, gathering strength and saving money. Every day, she spoke to Mitch on the phone. Finally, after five months, Aliénor got back on the road to finish the trek. Soon, she found that a cyclone had ravaged her section of the trail.

Aliénor: Il y avait des vaches mortes, des débris, de l’eau partout et beaucoup de moustiques…

Ngofeen: Three weeks after being back on the trail, Aliénor got a mosquito bite and contracted Ross River virus, a common danger for hikers in Australia. First she had a bit of a flu. Then she had a fever. Then the fever reached her joints.

Aliénor: J’avais des douleurs horribles et j’étais extrêmement fatiguée.

Ngofeen: When Aliénor told Mitch that she had contracted the virus, but planned to forge ahead, he offered his help. He took three weeks off from work and joined her. While she rode, he drove a back-up vehicle carrying her equipment and food and water.

Aliénor: Mitch était très présent et m’a beaucoup aidée. Alors, j’ai commencé à penser à un avenir avec lui.

Ngofeen: But soon, Mitch had to return to his job, and Aliénor faced the final leg of the journey alone. She was too exhausted to walk. The last portion of her journey was terribly steep and slippery, glissant.

Aliénor: Je ne pouvais pas marcher, et c’était très glissant. Mais mes chevaux ont bien contrôlé la situation. Mes chevaux glissaient mais ils ont avancé sans mon aide. Je ne les guidais pas, ils ont tout fait.

Ngofeen: Aliénor, Roxanne, River and Cooper pushed through. Finally, in July 2017, they reached the end of the trail.

Aliénor: C'était la fin d'une aventure qui avait duré trois années. J’avais dépensé tout mon argent et toute mon énergie. Je n’en pouvais plus. La fièvre tropicale m’avait beaucoup affectée, mais j’étais tellement fière de mes chevaux. À l’intérieur de moi, j’avais trouvé des ressources que je n’avais jamais imaginées.

Ngofeen: Aliénor was the first person ever to complete Australia’s Bicentennial National Horse Trail, with the same horses from start to finish. None of her horses were injured, and as the press covered the event, Aliénor talked about the brumbies and how amazing and resilient they were.

Aliénor: Les brumbies sont les seuls chevaux capables de faire une telle aventure. Sans mes brumbies, cela aurait été impossible. Ce sont des chevaux extraordinaires. Ils méritent d’être traités avec humanité. J’aimerais que les autorités arrêtent de les tuer par hélicoptère. Cela est cruel.

Ngofeen: At the finish line, a handful of riders were waiting for Aliénor and rode to the trail plaque with her. Even the director of Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse was there to congratulate her for completing her trek. Aliénor was grateful for their support, leur soutien.

Aliénor: J’étais très touchée par cette surprise. Beaucoup de gens m’avaient suivie sur les réseaux sociaux pendant plus d’un an. Je voulais les remercier pour leur soutien. J’ai prononcé quelques mots, j’ai remercié ma famille, mes chevaux… C’était difficile de ne pas pleurer.

Ngofeen: And Mitch… He drove 30 hours to come get her and to take her back to his farm. Aliénor also brought Roxanne, River and Cooper with her.

Aliénor: Un an plus tard, Mitch et moi, on s’est mariés sous un arbre à la ferme, juste entre nous. Maintenant, on vit là, Mitch, mes chevaux et moi, tous ensemble. Et tous les matins, mes chevaux attendent leurs carottes à la fenêtre.

Ngofeen: Aliénor and Mitch now live on his family cattle property in Queensland, and they have added two new brumbies…and a son to the family. In 2019, Aliénor and her activist friends won another battle for brumbies: a plan to strike down 6,000 wild horses was dropped in the state of Victoria.
