Episode 29: Le petit apiculteur (The Beekeeper Kid)

A young boy in the south of France discovers an unexpected passion for bees and beekeeping. But he’s not prepared for the heartbreak he’ll face when he leaves his little buzzing companions over the summer…

Ngofeen: It was a very ordinary, very uneventful, lazy weekend in March 2019. Mathieu Grima, age 11, was having a really boring day.

Mathieu: Normalement, le week-end, j’aime voir mes copains ou faire une randonnée. J’aime la nature et j’aime être dehors. Mais ce jour-là, je suis resté toute la journée à la maison, alors je m’ennuyais. Je n’avais rien à faire et je regardais des vidéos sur YouTube.

Ngofeen: Mathieu was clicking through random YouTube videos when one in particular caught his eye. It showed a pair of hands covered in thick yellow gloves, handling what looked like a rectangular wooden board. And that board was crawling with bees. The gloved hands belonged to a beekeeper, un apiculteur, who was tending to a wooden beehive, une ruche.

Mathieu: J’ai cliqué sur la vidéo et j’ai commencé à regarder.

Male voice: L’abeille est un symbole de la biodiversité…

Mathieu: C’était un apiculteur de ma région. Il avait une caméra GoPro sur la tête et il se filmait en train de s’occuper de ses abeilles et de ses ruches.

Male voice: L’avenir de l’abeille est entre nos mains…

Mathieu: J’étais fasciné.

Ngofeen: Mathieu watched attentively. On the screen, the beekeeper showed the worker bees. Then he pointed out the queen bee.

Male voice: La reine pond jusqu’à 2 000 œufs par jour…

Ngofeen: He showed how she had a long body, and short wings, des ailes.

Mathieu: L’apiculteur a montré la reine : elle a un corps plus gros et plus long que les autres abeilles, et des ailes plus petites. Il a tout expliqué sur la vie de la colonie : les abeilles ouvrières, la reine… J’ai trouvé ça passionnant.

Ngofeen: Mathieu was hooked. He started researching as much as he could about bees. What he learned disturbed him. Bees are critical to a healthy and balanced ecosystem, but they face many different threats: climate change, toxic pesticides, and invasive insect species like Asian hornets, which prey on bees.

Mathieu: J’ai appris que les abeilles sont en danger d’extinction. Et c’est un gros problème. Sans les abeilles, le pollen ne peut pas être transporté vers les fleurs et les plantes. Sans les abeilles, on pourrait perdre plus de la moitié des fruits et légumes sur la planète Terre !

Ngofeen: By the end of the day, Mathieu had made up his mind: he wanted to help and protect bees. He decided he would take up beekeeping. And the fact that he was only 11 years old, that wasn’t about to stand in his way.

Mathieu: Je voulais aider les abeilles. Elles ont besoin de nous pour survivre, et nous aussi, on a besoin d’elles.

Ngofeen: Mathieu lives with his mom, his dad and his 17-year-old sister in a small town called Pégomas, in southeastern France. Their house has a large backyard, which, in Mathieu’s opinion, made it the perfect place to install beehives. But, well, he was a kid… He had to check with his parents first.

Mathieu: J’ai demandé à mes parents si on pouvait mettre une ruche dans notre jardin. Ma mère n’aimait pas beaucoup cette idée. Elle n’aime pas les insectes. Et ma grande sœur, elle a peur, parce que les abeilles peuvent piquer. Elle ne voulait pas voir plein d’abeilles voler autour de la maison. Donc, mes parents ont dit non.

Ngofeen: Mathieu was disappointed. But he didn’t let go of the idea. In his town, there was a large gardening supply store with an aisle full of beekeeping supplies. Mathieu badgered his parents to take him there, and they did. Just to humor him.

Mathieu: Au début, mes parents ne pensaient pas que j’étais sérieux. Ils pensaient que j’allais oublier cette idée. Mes parents se sont dit : « Bon, on va y aller une fois, pour lui faire plaisir… » Mais moi, j’étais sérieux, et on est retournés dix fois à la boutique. Je passais des heures à regarder chaque ruche, chaque vêtement d’apiculteur, chaque accessoire…

Ngofeen: Mathieu kept going back. He was obsessed. He compared beehive models, researched the best beekeeper outfit… He got to know each item inside and out. One day, on the umpteenth visit to the store, Mathieu overheard two men talking. They were looking for a specific beehive model.

Mathieu: Je connaissais cette partie du magasin par cœur, alors je suis allé vers ces hommes. Je leur ai dit : « C'est un très bon choix ! Je peux vous montrer où est le modèle que vous cherchez. » Au début, ils avaient l’air un peu surpris, mais ils m’ont suivi.

Ngofeen: Mathieu showed them the beehive and they talked. Soon Mathieu’s parents came over to check on them. The older of the two men, a short, wiry fellow with a mop of silver hair, introduced himself. His name was Pierry, and he was a shepherd living nearby. He’d been raising bees on his pasture for over 40 years.

Mathieu: Pierry m’a demandé si moi aussi je m’occupais des abeilles. J’ai expliqué que je voulais mettre une ruche dans notre jardin, mais que ma mère n’était pas d’accord. À ce moment-là, Pierry a dit à mes parents : « Si Mathieu veut installer des ruches chez moi, il est le bienvenu. Je peux lui apprendre à devenir apiculteur. »

Ngofeen: Mathieu couldn’t believe his ears. Pierry the shepherd was offering to train him in beekeeping, and inviting him to put beehives on his land. Mathieu turned to his parents with pleading eyes. They seemed to be considering it.

Mathieu: Ils ont réfléchi pendant un moment. Et puis ils ont dit oui ! Je pense que mes parents ont compris que j’étais vraiment sérieux. Je voulais vraiment faire de l’apiculture. Donc, ils ont accepté. J’étais super content !

Ngofeen: Mathieu had been saving his money for this very moment. So after exchanging phone numbers with Pierry, he bought his first beehive. It was a rectangular wooden box, with a slit at the bottom for the bees to fly in and out. And inside, there were vertical wire mesh frames for bees to build their honeycombs. Mathieu was ready to become un apiculteur.

Mathieu: Mes copains et ma famille pouvaient voir que j’étais enthousiaste. En mai, mon anniversaire est arrivé, et tous mes cadeaux étaient des accessoires d’apiculture.

Ngofeen: Mathieu got a bee smoker, which beekeepers use to subdue bees so they’re safer to handle. He also got a kid-size beekeeper suit. It wasn’t as good as the grown up version, but it would do the trick.

Mathieu: Mais il me manquait le plus important : je n’avais pas encore d’abeilles. Il me fallait une colonie sauvage. Et ça, c’est très difficile à obtenir.

Ngofeen: To get Mathieu’s first bee colony, he and Pierry did something pretty scary. They set out to capture a swarm of honey bees, un essaim d’abeilles. Pierry explained that swarming bees are very vulnerable and if they don’t build a hive quickly, or get rescued by un apiculteur, they often starve to death. Mathieu was ready to help.

Mathieu: Pierry m’a emmené vers un arbre pour voir un essaim d’abeilles sauvages. On a mis nos costumes et on a pris ma ruche. On est allés ensemble vers l’arbre. L’essaim faisait beaucoup de bruit et les abeilles tournaient autour de l’arbre.

Ngofeen: Dressed in their protective suits, Pierry and Mathieu walked towards the swarm buzzing in the branches of the tree. They stopped right below it. Then Pierry placed Mathieu’s beehive directly under the swarm.

Mathieu: Quand tout était prêt, Pierry a secoué l’essaim. Ça a surpris les abeilles. Et là, bam ! Elles sont tombées dans la ruche. C’était très impressionnant.

Ngofeen: Thousands of startled bees fell directly into Mathieu’s open beehive. Some began buzzing furiously around, but most crawled groggily in the new space, gradually re-grouping around the queen. And just like that, Mathieu had his first bee colony.

Mathieu: On a transporté ma ruche chez Pierry, et il a commencé à m’apprendre l’apiculture. C’était au même endroit où il gardait ses moutons, donc il pouvait continuer à travailler pendant qu'il m'enseignait. J’allais le voir une fois par semaine, le samedi ou le dimanche.

Ngofeen: Pierry showed Mathieu how to light the smoker and use it to keep the bees calm while they handled the hives. He taught him how to safely remove and inspect the panels without harming bees, or disturbing the queen.

Mathieu: Il m’a montré comment reconnaître les différentes abeilles. Il m’a montré les abeilles ouvrières. Puis il m’a montré comment les abeilles ouvrières forment un petit cercle autour de la reine pour la protéger.

Ngofeen: Mathieu soaked it all in. He was keen on learning as much as he could to be able to protect the bees, and help them multiply and prosper.

Mathieu: J’aimais beaucoup mes abeilles. Quand j’arrivais, je leur disais bonjour, et je les regardais bouger activement. Pierry m’a appris qu’il faut rester calme avec elles. Il m’a dit de ne pas faire de mouvements rapides ou de bruits forts. Les bruits peuvent énerver les abeilles.

Ngofeen: As Mathieu learned to care for his bees, his affection for them grew. He watched them fly in and out of the beehives, ferrying pollen and nectar… He loved getting to know them — the females busy and active, the males fuzzy and plump, or dodus.

Mathieu: J’adorais voir les petites choses de leur vie que les gens ne voient jamais. Par exemple, les abeilles mâles sortent rarement de la ruche. Les mâles sont amusants. Ils ont beaucoup de poils et ils sont dodus. Plus j’en apprenais sur les abeilles, plus je les trouvais fascinantes. Je voulais acheter de plus en plus de ruches.

Ngofeen: Soon Mathieu had four beehives on Pierry’s land. And then he added a fifth. He wanted to shelter as many bees as possible to help them multiply, but Pierry pointed out that they were running out of space. Maybe Mathieu could contact the mayor’s office, la mairie, to ask if the town of Pégomas had any unused lots that could be used for beehives?

Mathieu: J’ai écrit un e-mail à la mairie avec l’aide de ma maman. On a expliqué que j’étais un jeune apiculteur de Pégomas et que j’avais appris avec Pierry. Et on a dit que Pierry était un apiculteur avec 40 ans d’expérience. On a aussi ajouté que je cherchais un endroit pour mettre mes ruches. Quelques semaines plus tard, j’ai reçu une réponse !

Ngofeen: City Hall agreed to grant Mathieu the use of a 1,000 square-foot lot for his bees. For free! The lot was…perfect. Surrounded by wildflowers, olive trees, and fragrant mimosa bushes for the bees to pollinate. Mathieu couldn’t wait to bring his bees to their new home. But first, the land had to be cleared, and then, Mathieu had to go on summer vacation and leave his bees behind.

Mathieu: Mes abeilles devaient rester encore quelques mois chez Pierry. Et moi, j’allais partir en vacances avec ma famille. Je ne pouvais pas imaginer ce qui allait se passer…

Ngofeen: In August, Mathieu and his family drove down to Spain for their two-week vacation. As he played on the beach, Mathieu felt safe in the knowledge that his bees were well-cared for back on Pierry’s pasture. Then one night, three days before the end of his trip, Mathieu’s phone rang. It was Pierry.

Mathieu: Au téléphone, Pierry était très inquiet. Il m’a dit : « Il y a une urgence ! Des frelons asiatiques commencent à attaquer les ruches. »

Ngofeen: Des frelons asiatiques. Asian hornets. They’re an invasive species that first reached France in the early 2000s, and they’re extremely aggressive. Their prey of choice: bees.

Mathieu: J’étais très inquiet. Quand des frelons asiatiques attaquent une ruche, ça peut être fatal. Ils peuvent tuer toutes les abeilles. Mais je ne pouvais pas demander à mes parents de revenir plus tôt en France. J’ai essayé de continuer de m’amuser, mais je pensais toujours à mes abeilles.

Ngofeen: Every day, Mathieu would call Pierry to get updates. Pierry’s response didn’t change: the hornets were still there, hovering around the hives. Mathieu waited impatiently. The final days of his trip felt like an eternity. During the long drive back, he couldn’t stop thinking about his bees.

Mathieu: J’ai dit à mes parents : « Quand on arrive à la maison, je dois vite aller chez Pierry. C’est très urgent. » Ils ont vu que c’était sérieux.

Ngofeen: As soon as they arrived in Pégomas, Mathieu and his mom rushed to Pierry’s pasture. When they pulled up, Mathieu jumped out of the car and ran to his hives. That’s when he saw them.

Mathieu: C’était comme une scène de crime. Il y avait dix frelons autour de chaque ruche. Ils volaient autour des ruches. Ils attendaient qu’une abeille sorte. Quand une abeille sortait, les frelons l’attrapaient.

Ngofeen: The hornets would drag any bee they caught far away from the beehive, then the hornets used their jaws to cut the bees open and eat them. Mathieu’s beehives were no longer buzzing with activity… They were under siege.

Mathieu: J’ai ouvert les ruches, et j’ai vu qu’il y avait très peu de nourriture. Les abeilles avaient peur de sortir. Elles ne pouvaient plus aller chercher à manger. Les abeilles étaient en train de mourir de faim.

Ngofeen: Trapped inside, Mathieu’s bees were starving to death. Mathieu tried to swat the hornets away or kill them, but they would just keep coming back.

Mathieu: Ça ne servait à rien. À chaque fois que j’arrivais à retirer un frelon, un autre venait prendre sa place.

Ngofeen: Now that the hornets had spotted Mathieu’s beehives and turned it into their feeding ground, the only way to save the bees was to move them somewhere else. But the new plot, le terrain, wasn’t ready yet.

Mathieu: Je ne pouvais pas déplacer mes ruches tout de suite. L’autre terrain n’était pas encore prêt. C’était horrible, parce que jour après jour, il y avait de moins en moins d’abeilles.

Ngofeen: Over the next few weeks, Mathieu could see the number of his bees in his hives dwindling. But there was nothing he could do.

Mathieu: Je ne pouvais rien faire. J’avais envie de pleurer, mais ça ne servait à rien de m’énerver. Il faut être calme devant les ruches. Je ne voulais pas faire encore plus peur aux abeilles.

Ngofeen: It would be another long two months before Mathieu could move his bees to the lot the town had offered. The land was still being cleared and leveled. By the time they were finally ready to move, Mathieu had lost three of his five beehives.

Mathieu: L’attaque des frelons m’a fait mal au cœur. J’ai même pensé à arrêter l’apiculture. Il y a beaucoup de risques, on peut tout perdre. Mais je sais que je ne pourrai jamais arrêter. C’est une passion maintenant. Je veux m’occuper des abeilles, les aider à bien vivre et à se multiplier.

Ngofeen: In October 2019, the lot offered by the town was finally ready. Mathieu and Pierry pulled on their protective gear and carefully loaded the remaining hives onto the back of a van. They were as gentle as possible, but moving stresses bees out. They become more aggressive. At one point, Mathieu felt a sudden, sharp pain in his left earlobe.

Mathieu: Une abeille a trouvé une petite ouverture dans mon vêtement d’apiculteur, et elle s’est glissée dedans. Ensuite, elle m’a piqué dans l’oreille ! C’était la première fois que j’étais piqué par une de mes abeilles. Ça a fait mal, mais maintenant, je suis vraiment sûr que je ne suis pas allergique.

Ngofeen: Mathieu didn’t blame his little bee for the sting. Most important to him was getting his bees to a good home, away from the hornets.

Mathieu: Quand j’ai vu le terrain ouvert et propre, j’étais vraiment content. C’était super ! Il y avait beaucoup d’espace, en pleine nature. On allait pouvoir mettre plein de ruches.

Ngofeen: It was a huge relief getting the bees to their new home. Saving every penny of his allowance, birthday and Christmas money, Mathieu gradually added one, two, then three more beehives to his collection. About a month after the move to the new lot, Mathieu’s mother surprised him with a special present.

Mathieu: C’était un vêtement d’apiculteur que je voulais depuis longtemps. Il était tout blanc, en coton spécial pour que les abeilles ne me piquent pas. Il y avait aussi de gros gants pour les mains et un casque à moitié transparent pour couvrir complètement la tête, le cou et le visage. Je ressemblais à un astronaute !

Ngofeen: From that point on, Mathieu began tending to his bees by himself, without Pierry’s guidance. To him, it felt like a turning point.

Mathieu: J’ai senti encore plus de responsabilité pour mes abeilles. Je voulais m’occuper d’elles le mieux possible. C’est comme des petits membres de ma famille… une très très grande famille !

Ngofeen: Today, Mathieu has a total of six beehives, and he goes to see his bees once a week. He’d go more often, but on weekdays his parents work and he has to go to school. On weekends, his mom and his dad take turns driving him to the hives. They usually sit on the grass, reading a book or checking their phones, while Mathieu pulls on his beekeeper suit and goes up to see his bees, alone.

Mathieu: Pour moi, être tout seul avec mes abeilles, ça me rend heureux. C’est mon moment préféré de la semaine. Pour l’instant, mes colonies sont encore trop jeunes et trop petites pour faire du miel. Si tout va bien, j'aurai mon premier miel en mai prochain ! Mais pour moi, ce n’est pas le plus important. Le plus important, c’est de protéger les abeilles. On a besoin d’elles, et elles ont besoin de nous.

Ngofeen: Mathieu Grima is currently in the 8th grade and lives in Pégomas, France. To protect against potential attacks by Asian hornets, he’s made plans to move his hives to a higher elevation, where the hornets don’t fly.
